Hi guys, I know there's costume threads already but I can't seem to get an answer in those and this is fairly urgent as I need to have this issue taken care of by this weekend.

I've come into possession of a brownish/beige wool overcoat that I would love to dye purple, but I'm terrified as I've never dyed a piece of clothing in my life.

I don't want to ruin the coat or have it fall apart on me or anything.

Any advice for a fellow clown would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

From what I've heard you as in us "non-professionals" can not dye a wool coat without it shrinking or messing up in some way or another. I suggest you take it to someone who knows about dying clothes. :yay:

I died 2 wool coats. I ruined one, but I ended up liking it anyway. The other one's color barely changed, but other than that it was fine.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you don't care about the coat.

You might try stripping the color out of the coat first, then use the purple/blue dye combo....

I have the perfect coat, right length, right amount of flare. The only problem is, it's black. It's a fairly heavy cotton velvet. I suspect if I dyed it purple it would a) ruin the washing machine in my apartment building, and b) not show up, but if I bleach it first, I might end up with some horrid tie-dye effect. And yet it really is the perfect coat. So: is there any method of colourstripping other than bleach? Or is there any sort of dye that might show up on black?

I do know from yarn that stuff like wool is easier to dye than vegetable-based fibres, not sure why.

I have a wool coat as well, perfect length. It's dark grey, soo it should be good

Vrich!!!!!!

Yes, I'm getting around a bit.

If I can't find some washable spray stuff to use on the coat, I might just wear it over a purple striped shirt I have with a sort of clashing 60s style striped tie and make the argument that its a variant outfit. (Goth Joker)

I got the coat dyed in time to chill with Adam West!

So what process did you end up using? The colour is great, and it does have that sort of grungey, broken-down-fabric look of the actual coat (which is not supposed to look brand new, it's supposed to look as if he sleeps in it).
