Earth Hour

Oh the thing from the esureance commercials? No, I am not.

No, as it's a pointless inconvenience.

I usually have all my lights off, but tomorrow at 8:30pm I will turn every singles light bulb I have in my house ON.

Turn everything off from 8:30-9:30pm tomorrow night? And miss Ashes to Ashes on BBC America?!

No, I won't.

Because while I'm perfectly fine with trying to save the Earth, I'm not going to go out of my way and change my daily routine, and be told when I can and can't use my electricity.

While I consider myself to be pretty left wing / liberal, this whole energy thing is one area I find myself to be pretty right / conservative.

We have oil, drill for it. Stop being dependent on foreign oil when we have our own here.

And I will not be told when I can and can't use electricity in my own home.

8:30 - 9:30 on a Saturday night is really some of the only time I have to myself in my own apartment to just relax and do what I wanna do (watch TV, play video games, cook dinner, etc...) without having to worry about work, family, or anything else.

I won't be home any way.

Meh, I'll probably do it. It's not like it's gonna do much but at least it will get me off my a$$.

This is so hypocritical. Waste tons and tons of energy 364 days and 23 hours each year but one hour!!! YAY!!!

This idea is completely moronic. It's not as if we won't be turning the power back in an hour anyway. THis is almost as ******ed as 1 day boycotts on Exxons or other gas companies. In reality such a short amount of time doing anything is only going to affect how you feel about yourself afterwards.

People who do this are doing it to feel like they did their part but really won't be making any difference at all.

I turn my lights out when I sleep every night. Isn't that enough?

I will not. It's stupid, and doesn't make a bit of difference.

Poll should have an option of What is earth hour? Never heard of it until now

most of my lights are out at that time anyway....

But no, I will not be turning out ALL my lights.

I think it's funny how everyone is *****ing about turning off their lights for a single hour.

Everyone is complaining not about the effort of turning off their lights, but about how pointless it is. It's a pointless gesture that doesn't really solve anything. You don't turn off your lights for one hour during one night of the year. You reduce the electricity you use in your home year round.

Screw the Earth. Screw going green. Screw saving the environment.

We'll all be dead before it gets really, really bad anyway.

The amount of cynicism in this thread is staggering. I can't believe all you people are so resistant to the idea of a symbolic act showing you care. It's not about the 1 hour making a huge difference in energy costs, it's about embracing the idea that there ARE things we can do to help change the future.

The future will require a less energy intensive lifestyle if you want to maintain a high quality of life. It's that simple. Energy won't be cheap anymore. If you want to be like Nell and start ripping up nature preserves so you don't have to be inconvenienced to turn the thermostat down 1 degree or walk the block to the store instead of drive, that's your choice.

But if you're too cynical to believe that your kids and mine have a right to as high a quality of life as us (if not better), then your selfishness knows no bounds.

On another note, my city of Calgary was a blemish on Earth Hour, showing a net increase in energy usage over the hour by 3%. They said it was because of the NHL game, which uses huge amounts of energy. This year, same thing: another Earth Hour, another hockey game.

I'll do my part. Because lighting some candles and reading a book for an hour is in no way a bad thing.

The whole "save the Earth" mentality is ******ed. The Earth will outlast the human race anyway.
If you want to cut down on pollution, good for you, but don't act like you're protecting the Earth.

Symbolism means nothing, especially since most people who are participating will do nothing else to "help" the environment. I won't be participating for a few reasons. One, all my electronics (save my clocks and refridgerator) are off when I go to bed, and with the addition of a small light, they're off all day I'm at school. Two, I don't buy that this will help the planet, and I protest the hypocrisy behind it. Three, the cost of energy is ultimately not determined by anything other than people, who will likely raise the costs anyway.

I will...in 5 minutes. By the way...you're not doing it to make a difference in global warming or anything like that. Turning off power for an hour wont make much of a difference...its really about raising awareness. When many people participate in something like Earth Hour that causes others to think how to live in an environmentally friendly way. So saying something like Earth hour is "stupid" is stupid itself imo :o
