Yes there is. But the bottom line is: How will boyotting a movie that he isn't involved with actually hurt him? Aside from (even more) negative media attention, is it actually going to cause any damage to him, personally, or to the production itself that doesn't deserve unnecessary vitriol?

Never said it was worse. Said (or implied rather,) it was enough.

There's a difference between not believing in gay marriage, and wanting to lock people up for being gay. Not to mention all the other crap he has said and supported.
Exactly, he did not just say he didn't believe in Gay marriage.

If that's the standard, you'd have to toss out everything made before the 1990's.

I'm not advocating a boycott. In fact, I think that would backfire. But personally, something being the work of a noted bigot, makes me have second thoughts about seeing it.

Using the claim of thousands of people being hurt by a boycott (all those people who aren't going to get paid, they already got paid) is ad hominem. Using this logic we should all go see every movie to prevent these people from losing their jobs. It's ridiculous.

People have the right to protest as free speech their disagreement with someone else's free speech. Boycotting is one form of protest.

Now whether this movie is a success or a failure is unlikely to be greatly altered by the boycott or support of those surrounding Card's comments.

Boycotting only occasionally works directly but the meaning behind it is to show support or protest against who or whatever the boycott is over, even if it ultimately does not directly influence a change. The boycott itself draws attention to the issue at hand.

My position on the movie is I'll probably see it on Netflix but I won't go to the theater. I don't feel that enthusastic with what I've seen of it and Card spewing his opinions isn't helping matters.

I also said in that earlier post that if I saw something better I'd reconsider it. The major fact is this has taken so many years to make it this far (after repeated false starts) and they've altered the story to an extent I don't know of. How close it hews to the story will be important. Hollywood loves to mutilate adaptations.

I haven't purchased any of Scott's books since I learned about the extent he's taken his beliefs. And that's hard for me to do because Enchantment is one of my top 3 favorite novels of all time and I don't own a copy.

You know what would make sense? Asking people to not buy the newly released hardcover and paperback novelizations of ender's game. The profits of those DO go directly to Card's pocket, and if that movement is large enough it will send a clear message to the publisher.

That makes a lot more sense than boycotting the movie.

I haven't bought any of his books since I read his remarks either.

I didn't even know what Ender's Game was until Harrison Ford got involved. But guess what? It already passed by me when I was watching Gundam and Evangelion in my youth. So good luck to that film.

Am I the only one who thinks there's some not-so-subtle homoerotica in the Ender's Game novel? Which is ironic..

I cannot support Ender's Game with my money and will advise friends, family, and co-workers not to see it.
I usually am able to separate art from the artist, but thanks to those of you who have exposed this guy by leading us to his writings, I have found his dedication and intensity to his political cause to be so great that I am unable to get separate him from the movie.
So although I love Harrison Ford, I cannot go see it with a good conscious and sincerely hope no one else does.
Ironically, he is the one asking for "tolerance" from those who disagree with him now that the movie is going to come out.
We speak with our pocket books.
Let's see it flop.

Which is always hilarious. "Why, oh why, is no one tolerating my intolerance?!"

:o

I was considering seeing this but after hearing about his comments, I most definitely will not be paying to see it.

There is a difference between being against homosexuality/disagreeing with gay marriage and saying that Gay sex should be outlawed and that some Gays should be jailed to deter people from being gay. And he practically called for the government to be taken down over this issue. Nothing about his position is in any way tolerant so his pleas for tolerance are a big fat joke. This isn't a Mormon nation and the sooner he deals with that fact the better.

There is a theory that those who are most against homosexuality are in fact in denial of their own homosexual feelings and lash out at them and anyone associated with them. It's intriguing but almost impossible to prove and I think probably an exaggeration.

Though there's ample anectdotal evidence supporting it when you see how many "burn the gays at the stake!" rhetorics are later found to either have been or are having homosexual relationships.

Whatever the truth is, I do chuckle when someone does make anti-homosexual remarks only to be found inadvertantly promoting them in some other way.

I really doubt 99% of Mormons are gay though.

Well it's more like 90% probably, who openly oppose homosexuality.

I think some of you guys will check out the movie anyway, but you won't pay for it.

The theory is targeted at the most vocal, the ones who are loudest in their proclamations although I agree it's probably exaggerated even at that point. Politicians will say anything to get elected or reelected for instance. Some people just hate differences in others or are brought up to believe that way.

Oh I don't entirely disagree. I mean, we wouldn't catch so many evangelicals with gay prostitutes if that weren't the case.

But, the average person can be pretty... genocidal in their own right.

What I did find curious that his books are often about defying authority... even though he himself comes off as a fascist. That's just strange.

Yeah... "IF YOUR GOVERNMENT TRIES TO REDEFINE MARRIAGE, I'LL STOP AT NOTHING TO BURN IT TO THE GROUND!!!"

Whatever the case may be for Card he is certainly confused on what he is saying.

The irony behind all of this is that traditional sci-fi is about the exploration, wonders, and possibilities of our society.

And yes, Card's personal beliefs goes against that.

Here’s Lionsgate’s official statement:
“As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from GODS AND MONSTERS to THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and a Company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of ENDER’S GAME. The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form. On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for ENDER’S GAME.”

Seems the message of the boycotters is getting attention from the studio afterall.
