Fantastic news! Scolari won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and took Portugal to the Euro 2004 final. He's the only candidate anywhere near Sven's league - even better than Sven on paper.

really i think the england management job should return to an english man.

saying this, i don't know whether there are any national coaches at the moment that are good enough to step up to the plate and deliver the goods.

There aren't, that's the whole point. The best managers in the Premiership are from France, Spain, Scotland and Portugal.

maybe it's just a coincidence that they have the best teams more than anything else.

It's good news, but I can't wait to see what dirt the sun will find on him! You know its only a matter of time. Personally I think this whole way of thinking that the manager needs to be English is stupid, surely it should be the best man for the job. Whilst I would've prefered a management duo of Guus Hiddink and Steve MClaren, Scolari will be interesting, I remember how he basically ended the careers of Figo and Couto at euro 2004. I wonder what will happen to the under performers of late e.g. the Gerrards and Beckhams. It's certainly not going to be dull if he accepts.

I read Mr. Blatter wants all national teams to have managers from that country, I find this ridiculous the reason teams like Japan, Nigeria etc have come on leaps and bounds in world football is because of foreign influences like Zico.

Belm. The reason that there are no English managers in the same league as Scolari, is because all the top clubs go abroad to find new managers. As a result, folk like Curbishley, McClaren, Alladyce etc have no opportunities at the highest level. In the case of McClaren, I find it odd that reaching the FA Cup Semi Final and strong progress in the UEFA cup with essentially a second rate team are not good for the FA.

Personally, I hope Scolari turns it down.

Second rate team?
Viduka, Yakubu, Hasselbaink, Mendieta, Boateng, Southgate, Quedrue, Schwarzer? I like the work Steve's done but the team he's assembled is far from second rate, look at the money the guys spent. They have a better front three than most of the top teams in the premiership!

That's why I said essentially a second rate team. Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Man. U, Chelsea are the top 5 teams in the Prem. With a bigger club, or mo' money, McClaren could easily be a world class manager.

As an aside though, none of the players you've mentioned are anywhere near the class of Gerard, Lampard, Henry, Rooney etc...

Yeh they are in the top 5 places, but McClarens squad is as good as the Spurs or Arsenal squad. As I said he has a front three better than Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool, he has one of the top Keepers in the country and also one of the most consistant defenders in Southgate. He's spent a shed load of money o this team, something like £13 million just on Southgate and Ugo.
I don't want McClaren to be involved on the merits of this season, more due to his work back in 1999 as Fergies number 2 in the treble winning season and his ability to bring through young players like Parnaby, Downing, Morrison and Taylor.

If we are going on this seasons merits and a bloke who has had little money to spend then Alan Pardew is the main man along with Paul Jewell.

As for McClarens personel
Boateng is wanted as Roy Keanes replacement
Yakubu has scored goals consistantly for both a struggling Pompey side and a struggling Boro
Viduka was courted by Roma, Real Madrid and Inter Milan
Schwarzer was wanted at Arsenal up until Lehmans form developing around Christmas.

Why is one of the best managers in the Premiership Scottish? Should he be managering Scotland, they need all the help the can get.
