Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

The FF's theatrical run has literally just started, and by the looks of these IMAX screenings, they are selling like hotcakes. They will be fine, and probably would've matched Supes' opening if they had an Amazon Tuesday too. :o

But from what I see between geekdom, GA and all things in between on the net, a lot of people are digging the movie.

Knew this film was really a hit when I saw Black Twitter take to it with the memes, so mission accomplished.

Saw this earlier tonight and I'm going with an 8/10. Felt a bit undercooked in parts, but they nailed the family and exploration aspects and the cast was all-around solid. Fingers crossed that we get a sequel not long after Secret Wars.

There's a fan edit of the F4 trailer with Dom narrating about family. :o

hey guys I’m back! Finally saw it tonight. Full review (spoilers ahead) it’s a long read…

So we waited 20 years for this, since the disaster that was F4, the, that whatever that disgusting body horror was. So, how does this compare? This is the first try at Fantastic Four from the Marvel Studios crew. Kevin Feige, and co. And what can I say about it? Overall, I'm gonna give it a, I hate to say it, but a 6.5 out of 10. The reason I give it a 6.5 is because the pacing was terrible. The first half was pretty boring in my opinion. It was really slow paced. The movie really picked up once they got into space and uh, they met Galactus for the first time. From that point on, it really took off.

Uh, I'm gonna go through the cast right now. Pedro Pascal, yeah, like people were saying he wasn't that great, but he wasn't that bad, so he was kind of mediocre. Uh, Vanessa Kirby, I thought she did a fine job. Wasn't fantastic, no pun intended, but it was good. Uh, Ebon Moss-Bacharach, uh, I was thrown off by the thing because I felt like his voice should have been like more like, like grimy, like, you know, like Michael Chiklis did a great job for the thing. Uh, doing the voice of the thing. Uh, in the, you know, the 2000, what year was that, 2005 or 2, no. It was early 2000s, in any case, he did a great job, but Ebon Moss-Bacharach kind of, he took me out of the movie cause his voice was just a normal person, and I was expecting like a gruff, monstrous voice. You'd think when you go through anatomical changes like that, your voice box would change too, but, eh, whatever. They nailed the look though, like, crazy good. Uh, otherwise, Human Torch was really the, he was the highlight for me. Uh, he, uh, what was his name? I forgot his name right now, but anyway, the guy from Stranger Things, killed it. He was amazing, he did an even better job than Chris Evans in my opinion, because he really owned the, the role, whereas Chris Evans was just being wisecracking. Uh, you know, although, you know what, I have to say the original Fantastic Four, when I say original, I mean the, the early 2000s ones, they were actually better in an entertainment standpoint, which is really bad to say, but it's true, because the pacing was really good, it was a family movie, it was lots of laughs, lots of action, whereas this, there's only like a few giggles here or there, it wasn't really a lot of comedy, and the action was few and far between, and when it, when there was action, it was kind of, it was really toned down, I don't know, it was just like a whimper, it wasn't like a big, you know, infinity war.

If you're. expecting an Infinity War endgame, you're not gonna get that. The closest thing we got to that was Galactus when he was walking through the city like Godzilla minus one. That was pretty cool. But besides that, and they fought Galactus too, the set pieces, the action pieces weren't that, they were underwhelming to say the least. So those are the things that were wrong with the movie. What really went right with the movie was the look, the aesthetic, they really nailed it. The 60s, you know, like futuristic look. They pulled off one of the most visually unique MCU movies yet, uh, because it really harkens back to the Watchmen, if you ever watched Watchmen by, uh, Zack Snyder, it nailed that look. It really, they, they nailed the look. It, it was visually aesthetically pleasing. Uh, the soundtrack was quite repetitive though, it, you should not notice the soundtrack, but I was noticing the soundtrack over and over. He didn't, he didn't come up with any more variations, it's just, you know, piano version, then a big version, but, you know, the Avengers soundtrack was way better, so, I don't know, I think it's lacking in that department. And then we have the post-credits scene, spoiler alert, but Doom is in it, and that was underwhelming. I thought, okay, yeah, finally, you know, I wasn't even, no one went, oh, we were just like, oh, finally, about time. It was like, what took you so long, kind of thing.

Um, but overall, I thought the first half of the movie was like a 4 out of 10, maybe 5 at best. The second half of the movie was a strong 7, 7.5. So, all in all, that's why I give it a 6.5 out of 10, and I probably won't see another Marvel Studios movie in theaters anymore, except for the Spider-Man movies. I feel like it's a waste of my time and money now. Like, I'll just wait for the Fantastic Four movies, you know, whatever, when they, when they come out, and the only other movie I'll watch is obviously the Avengers, Doomsday, and all those secret wars, whatever they're coming up with. Gonna watch those, the, the two Avengers movies coming out, and then the Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day. Besides that, I'm not gonna waste my money on Marvel anymore, I'm just gonna watch The Predator, Badlands, that looks amazing, I'll probably have a good time with that.

But was it worth the wait? Verdict is yes, visually it was worth the wait, because it did everything that the old Fantastic Four movies didn't do, in terms of nailing the, the look, nailing the spirit of the comic book, in terms of the, the look. The dynamic was there, I thought the chemistry was there between the characters. Uh, you, you, you could believe, you know, Vanessa Kirby and, uh, Johnny Storm were brother and sister, you didn't feel like it was, you know, that they were pretending, like it seemed like they were. Uh, the chemistry between Reed and Sue, I, I thought it was there, I wasn't, I didn't feel so good about it, I wasn't like, yeah, I love them, you know, I ship them, no. The chemistry between Human Torch….(continued next post)

Part 2

Readers Digest version

**Post 1** So, we waited twenty years for Fantastic Four: First Steps, hoping it’d erase the stink of that body-horror mess from the early 2000s. Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, and crew gave it a shot. My take? It’s a 6.5 out of ten. Why? The pacing is straight-up terrible. The first half bored me to death—way too slow. Things didn’t kick into gear until they hit space and met Galactus. That’s when it finally felt alive.

**Post 2** Let’s talk cast. Pedro Pascal as Reed? People trashed him, but I thought he was okay—just kinda meh. Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm was solid, not amazing, but fine. Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing threw me off big time. His voice was too normal, not gruff like Michael Chiklis nailed in the 2005 flick. You’d think turning into a rock monster would mess with your vocal cords, right? But they crushed the Thing’s look—visually, it was spot-on.

**Post 3** Human Torch was the standout. The guy from Stranger Things—forgot his name, but he owned it. Better than Chris Evans, who was mostly just cracking wise. Comparing to the early 2000s Fantastic Four, those were actually more fun. They had tight pacing, laughs, and action. This new one? Barely any giggles, and the action felt weak, like it was holding back. No Infinity War-level epicness here.

**Post 4** The Galactus scenes were cool, though—especially him stomping through the city like Godzilla Minus One. That was a highlight. But the rest of the action? Underwhelming. The set pieces didn’t pop. What did work was the aesthetic. They nailed the 60s futuristic vibe, like Watchmen levels of style. Easily one of the most unique-looking MCU films yet.

**Post 5** Soundtrack was a letdown, though. Too repetitive—kept noticing it, which isn’t good. Compare that to the Avengers score, and it’s no contest. Oh, and the post-credits scene with Doom? Total snooze. Everyone in the theater was like, “Finally, but why’d it take so long?” First half of the movie’s a four or five out of ten; second half’s a solid seven or seven-point-five. That averages to my 6.5.

**Post 6** Was it worth the wait? Visually, yeah—it nailed the comic book spirit and look. The team’s chemistry was decent; you bought Sue and Johnny as siblings. Reed and Sue’s vibe was okay, but not ship-worthy. Torch and Thing’s dynamic felt forced, not like the natural bromance of Chiklis and Evans. Mole Man got shafted—thirty seconds and done? Should’ve been a bigger deal, maybe fifteen-minute chunks to flesh it out.

**Post 7** Biggest fix? Skip the slow origin. Open with Galactus wrecking shop—boom, instant hook. Flashback the origin later to keep the energy high. Silver Surfer felt off too; maybe a male would’ve hit harder. Pacing killed it, and the lack of jokes hurt—Marvel’s known for humor, but this was too serious. I’m done with MCU theater trips except for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the Avengers flicks. Verdict: visually worth it, but the story? Nah. Needed more action, better pacing, and way more laughs.

I have done some more thinking about First Steps. I think all the pieces are there to create an even better sequel. They simply need a better script and better pacing. I think this would have excelled more as a Disney+ series in order to flesh the characters out more and have the audience emotionally invest in them and allow the emotional poignant milestone moments more time to breathe and really take in the experience. It felt like a rushed movie it could have used another 30-40 minutes run time. I would have been fine with 3 hours to be honest. Have

mole man as the villain in the first hour a la The Dark Knight…then have Galactus as seen in the film…they should have had more action scenes not a few seconds of them beating up villains rather extend those sequences or better yet save them for future sequels…

I would like to see a 3 hour cut to see Red Ghost and the deleted scenes. I feel like they removed huge chunk of Mole Man's scenes in the earlier part of the movie.
I was reallyl okay with the way they handled all of that and thought it quite clever. It was a way to get an intro via the evening news. I think it would have been easy to drag the movie on too long. I'd rather have what we now have and not take that risk with maybe a future release that incorporates more.

I think I was starting to annoy my wife. She knows nothing about the comics and I'd whisper to her "Mole Man....that's...." and "Latveria.....that's....". After awhile, I just shut up, but I was pretty excited and couldn't really help myself. LOL

EDIT: I give it an 8 out of 10 and that seems to be about the general consensus when I poke around reviews. I think it's going to do VERY well in the box office longer term if they keep it in theaters and I don't see why they won't. The upcoming schedule is, to put it mildly, way less than impressive. I think this is a great family movie that a wide group of people will want to see......many of them return customers....including me.....

Fans were calling Superman a flop after 1 weeks also. In truth, they don't know anything or have too high expectations. The OW was good. Maybe not a home run, but it was still very good. This didn't have to beat Superman or make a billion dollars. See the numbers I posted, domestically speaking this movie is going to out perform quite a few MCU 1st solo films. It won't have the same international grosses many of them did, but that's just how the market has been for everyone.

The FF are going to be the like....3rd best performing movie since Phase 5 started in all likelihood. They will be not just featured, but main characters in Doomsday and maybe Secret Wars. At minimum, they're going to get 1 sequel. Now, if that hypothetical sequel tanks like The Marvels, then they're done. But I feel very good staking whatever internet reputation I have that they get at least 1 sequel.
Agreed. And get this: the film just cleared $14M on Tuesday, and $10M the day before that. So the word of mouth is VERY positive for Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Sadly, it's become very "in vogue" to be toxic and hate on anything and everything online these days. Anything remotely showing a woman in charge is "woke". What's up is down, and what's really in--like showing kindness and empathy to others--is "out". There are a lot of bitter, unhappy people out there who thrive on negativity and dangle rage bait from behind faux user profiles. Their motives are crystal clear. But judging by these box office tallies, it's obviously not having an impact on this--or Superman's--momentum.

I wish we also could meet with Valeria soon...hopefully in the sequel 😀

While Franklin inherited enormous power from his parents' genetic, Valeria inherited her father's intelligence, it would be a nice brother and sister dynamic to see both Franklin and Valeria together.
