Hey folks, I was thinking that in honor of Pride Month, it might be cool to have a thread to discuss our favorite LGBTQ2S+ movies in general.

In the past couple months I've seen (and added) a few new additions to my 'favorites' list:

Call Me by Your Name - not much more I can say that hasn't already been expressed. Deserves its accolades, though I am sensitive to the fact that a particular casting choice may be an issue for some viewers.

Edge of Seventeen - found this gem on Netflix. It was released in 1998 but feels timeless.

Hellbent - Awesome gay-themed slasher! I'm also a horror fanatic and this is one of the best I've seen. Reminds me of John Carpenter's original Halloween, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. Fellow horror hounds, you just might have a new favorite here too :yay:

Hedwig And The Angry Inch
Rocky Horror Picture Show
(Oddly enough, I am not much of a fan of musicals, but those two are some of the very few exceptions)
Paris is Burning
But I’m a Cheerleader

and while not outright an LGBTQ+ film, it is still pretty queer:
Jawbreaker.

And even though it isn’t a film, I’m putting Pose on the list because that show is *phenomenal*

Criminally underrated neo noir.

Bound is one of my favorites as well. Easily one of the best, and sexiest, crime thrillers ever made.

Moonlight and The Birdcage.

There a new one on Hulu called Fire Island that @Primal Slayer recommended but I haven't gotten a chance to watch yet

I love Moonlight. Beautiful film.

Another one I'd throw into the hat is Mulholland Drive. Though not specifically an LGBTQ+ film, it still has an underlying queer subtext, as well as one of the most haunting same-sex love scenes ever put to film.

Another one that looks interesting is Bros. Apparently it's the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio featuring an entirely LGBTQ principal cast...

EDIT: Removed the trailer because I didn't realize it had naughty words lol. Easy enough to look up though...

For me, Bound was pretty awesome and Birdcage/La Cage aux Folles were classics. Robin Williams was so freaking talented, it was unfair. A friend of mine met him and brought him to our house in Marin Co. a long time ago and he was just as funny and manic as you would think. A shame he's gone.

While it wasn't necessarily a LGBTQ movie, I loved Bohemian Rhapsody. I almost didn't go to see it because I thought I might get too sad and, while I did get sorta sad at the very end, I'm glad I went.

Oh my god how could I forget the Birdcage! One of my favourite Robin Williams films. So dang funny from beginning to end.

Full disclosure - I never saw Birdcage  Quite strange considering what a cultural phenomenon the film was...

One other movie I'd like to draw attention to is Last Summer. I found this one on Tubi last year and thought it was very effective. It's slow and deliberate and almost has a Malick vibe to it, with stunning cinematography and a thick air of melancholy. Highly recommended if this is your kind of film. Nothing naughty in the trailer either...

My favourite movie is Priscilla, queen of the desert. It makes me so happy but at the same time it handles some very important themes. I actually would love it if they made a sequel in a very different australia.

glad someone mentioned shortbus, love that one too. Also Utopians

Thanks Deckster! Great list too. Several of your faves that I haven't watched yet. Lots to look forward to :yay:

I loved Velvet Goldmine! And Rocky Horror is a staple every Halloween at my house haha. Sexier than it has any right to be...

Brokeback Mountain is one of the best films I've ever seen, in any genre. I have to be in a particular frame of mind to watch it though. It's great for those times when you need a good emotional cleanse...

I recall you saying in another thread that you like horror movies. Give Hellbent a try! It's legitimately scary and sexy as hell, one of the best slashers ever made:

oooh....yeah. Is Sean Penn talented or what? I used to live in the Castro on 17th just above Castro and Market. There was always a really good, positive vibe.

Sounds like an awesome place to live @InCali. The only US state I've ever visited is Florida...

But California is definitely on my bucket list :yay:

Thanks! Yeah I will definitely check out Hellbent. I love good horror. On that note, I guess Martyrs (kind of) counts as a queer horror film. Check that one out if you haven’t seen it. It’s easily one of my favorite films, though I don’t know that I could ever watch it again after seeing it a few times. It’s just too brutal.

Martyrs has been on my radar for awhile now, but I chicken out every time I get serious about watching it! It looks really brutal and intense...

I love horror but I don't wanna sleep with the lights on all night :D

Yeah, it’s not an easy film to watch but if you can make it to the end, I think you’ll appreciate it. Definitely one of the most impactful horror films I’ve seen.

Also, another movie I’ll add to this list here (surprisingly) was The New Mutants. It’s not a great movie by any means but I just have to give it credit for being a superhero film that put a queer love story front and center, rather than shying away from queer subtext the way certain other films of the same genre have done.

For sure, I'll give Martyrs a chance one night when I'm feeling brave haha...

I personally feel that New Mutants wasn't treated fairly by critics. I finally saw it a couple months ago and actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

It wasn't a great film by any stretch but I appreciated how the producers tried to take a different approach with the material. They didn't shy away from the queer subtext, like you said, and it almost played like a '90s teen horror film.

I was pleasantly surprised...

Yeah, I had the same reaction to it. I watched it, expecting it to be terrible, and was pleasantly surprised. Not everything about it works but I enjoyed it overall.

I'm sure this could be said for a lot of the larger states in the US, but California seems to me more like a country in and of itself; both culturally and economically. Not to pigeon hole the areas too much, but you have the LA area which has a very strong entertainment industry; including arts, sports, food, beach areas, etc. Orange and San Diego counties have a strong technology sector and a lot of theme parks. When you get to the Bay Area (San Francisco, San Jose, in particular) you have world renown wine country and the probably even more well known Silicon Valley and a very left leaning political bent. Move inland to the central valley and you have one of the world's largest producers of agricultural products; most especially fruits, nuts and dairy. If you were to look at the world's largest economies, California would rank 5th in the entire world; just behind Germany and just in front of the UK. Culturally, there is a very wide variety of people and opinions; and there's a lot of us; almost 40M people. This is almost 1/8 of the population in the entire US.
What does this all have to do with our favorite LGBTQ movies? Nothing really........:funny: , but San Francisco is one of the Meccas of the gay community and a very fun place to visit; if you have money. LOL. I was fortunate enough to live in the city, have visited many friends I have there frequently, and love it there.
