John Hughes's comedy was released in US cinemas on June 11, 1986.

Easily my favorite John Hughes movie.

TCM re-released it in theaters last month; I didn't get to see it then, but luckily I saw it when it first came out - I think that was the summer my mother had broken both her legs when she fell down outside our church, and while she was in the hospital my stepdad thought it'd be a good idea to take me to see it...when I was nine years old.

I loved it, though, which, considering that neither ILM nor John Williams had anything to do with the film (well, O.K., yeah, the Star Wars theme plays during the shot of the two guys in the Ferrari, but JUST THAT ONE TIME), was a pretty spectacular achievement in our family. :woot:

They're actually playing it at my local theater on Sunday and Wednesday. I'm excited to get to see this classic on the big screen.

I was probably a little bit older than you were the first time I saw it. All things considered, it's a pretty kid-friendly movie as far as 80's teen comedies go save for some language here and there.
