FIRESTAR #1
WRITER: Sean McKeever
ART: Emma Rios
THE STORY:
Angelica Jones has been many things in her life. Daughter. Friend. Fiancée. Mutant. Hellion. New Warrior. Avenger. And, most recently, cancer survivor. Granted a second chance at life, Angelica has only one question for herself: What do I do with it? One-Shot/Rated T ...$3.99
IN STORES: April 21, 2010

Firestar's been getting a lot of love lately. Good to see.

Yes, he is. So I would imagine this may lead into it. He also writes the NOMAD back up strips in CAPTAIN AMERICA as well as the NOMAD: GIRL WITHOUT A WORLD mini series.

I still think the $4 price tag is very prohibitive for a lot of these random one-shots about characters who are hardly well known or popular. Firestar was a TV icon...25 years ago. Still, if Marvel doesn't care what it sells, that's fine. I seriously believe their sales strategy is to overwhelm with quantity, so it doesn't matter if ULTIMATE DOCTOR BONG sells only 10,000 copies at $3.99 a pop, so long as it helps extend the amount of comics Marvel releases per month to 100 or so, they don't care.

Still...I may give it a shot. I liked McKeever's NOMAD stuff and I even liked his GRAVITY stuff. I thankfully missed his drek at DC so my opinion of his stuff hasn't been tainted. This one shot does seem to be trying to take stock of all that Angelica has done over the years, especially her MARVEL DIVAS stint that no one read (can't imagine why; tacky title, misleading T & A cover artwork, $4 an issue, D-List characters, no-name creative team, incompetent promotion, why oh why did this not sell 600,000 copies?), so it may be more of a continuity exercise than a story, but that may not be so bad, either. I mean, PSYLOCKE got an entire mini series for basically the same reason.

I'll probably pick this up since it will likely connect to Young Allies in some way, even if it's as tenuous as simply giving me a taste of what McKeever's Firestar will be like in that series. I wonder if we'll see any other Warriors in the one-shot. That issue of Nova where Richie, Vance, and Angelica got together was pretty cool.

It was, although to be fair, Nova is usually pretty busy these days. And Justice has basically rebounded with Ultra Girl; he had a chance to break up with her, and balked because he seems to enjoy her company.

Poor Robbie Baldwin, though, probably needs a hug. :p

According to McKeever, he claimed YOUNG ALLIES may not exactly be a team book like others are but a book in which the focus on individual young heroes shifts every issue. In a way it could actually be similar to the initial John Bryne run of ALPHA FLIGHT, where every issue focused on one character rather than being a predictable "team book". Of course, that was before the era of 6 issue arcs and $4 comics. Nowadays people are reasonably less patient. When a comic costs more than a gallon of gas during a recession, I don't really argue the logic.

Still...Firestar should really be leading a team at this point or be on a team that isn't yet another collection of teenagers at this point. I think they stated she was still 19, but that was in 2006, and it's been "one year" since Cap was dead; Angelica at the youngest should be 20 by now, if not 21 (so she could legally drink in MARVEL DIVAS). I suppose if McKeever writes Firestar as wondering why she isn't bigger name herself and that is part of her YOUNG ALLIES schtick, that might be fun. Like when all of the "Teen Titans" who are pushing 30 wonder why they're still Titans. :p

McKeever is a name that guarantees I'll buy a book, so I'll be picking this up.
