OK, I thought why not, folk music deserves some kind of mention I thinks, although most people think of morris dancers, there is a lot more to folk, for example, Fairport Convention(the founders of folk-rock), Loudon Wainwright(one of the most sucessful singer/songwriters in America), Richie Havens(say no more) and Arlo Guthrie(another long term veteran!)

So Just share recommendations and veiws etc :)

BTW I didn't forget Richard Thompson, I was just saving him till last, not only one of the best guitarist, but a highly emmotional singer and fantastic songwriter!

(If anyone wants links to any of these, just ask...)

Mike Scott, a singer/songwriter who fronts the Waterboys as well as a solo career. He is the most underrated artist EVER

^waterboys:up: but are they really folk? I guess, kinda..at times at least

Anne Briggs, Jackson C.Frank, incredible string band, steeleye span, pentangle...

Steve Gellman,we use to work together and I've seen him a few times,he has a good following.

Chieftains very moving music.

Ani DiFranco, I own nothing and have never seen her in concert, but I have heard and seen I'm very impressed and indeed desire to catch a live show.

David Gray,I've seen him once and wasn't aware of his range of stlye but it was a plesant surprise and will gather up some of the tunes that captivated me.

Richie Havens, seen him once and was very moved.

Indigo Girls,I love these girls, great lyrics.

Joni Mitchell, :yay:

Suzanne Vega, sang one of her songs in my accapllea class for finals,I can't remember what I got. :O

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, saw them with my first Dead show. :woot:

I know there's more but I'm lazy.

Good to hear, he can actually play a bassline, rythm and lead aswell as singing at the same time, he's like a folk version of hendrix or something! Insane! He tours England a lot too, so YAY for me, although I've missed him every time due to stuff, next year tho....

Bob Dylan and Simon & Garfunkel are easily the two best acts the genre has to offer.

I do love simon and Garfunkel, but richard thompson is the greatest folk musician, and loudon wainwright is a genius song writer, hmmmm, what would be my folkstock line up.....

-Fairport convention
-Richard Thompson
-Loudon Wainwright
-Eliza Carthy
-Arlo Gurthrie
-Richie Havens
-Sandy Dennie(sp?)

Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Ritchie Havens, Iron & Wine, Simon & Garfunkel, The Chieftans, Joanna Newsom, Joan Baez...all good. And I have to say, Mississippi John Hurt is as much folk as he is blues. In fact, most of the old delta players could be called folk musicians. Tom Waits began his career as a folk artist. I have a CD of early recordings he did and it's all pretty much just voice and acoustic guitar, with a standup bass and a piano here and there. Neil Young's done some folky stuff too. I'm not sure if I'd call The Decemberists folk...same with Cat Power, Jenny Lewis, White Ghost Shivers and Jolie Holland.

Vincent Black song sounds stupid.

And not to knock on his talent at playing the guitar, but who cares if he plays 1 guitar and makes it sound like 2? Aslong as the overall sound is the same, does anyone really care?

Alittle new, but according to myspace, its Folk.
Rocky Votolato - White Daisy Passing.

Not to mention that it was rated as one of the best contemporary folk songs, and that richard thompson was given a lifetime achievement award for his influence in folk music, so yeah...who cares:whatever:
