Enthusiasts Back In 'Burgh For Convention

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― If you've seen animals roaming the streets of Pittsburgh, there's no need to worry, it's just that thousands of furry enthusiast have returned to town for their annual meeting at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Like any other conference, the Anthrocon Convention features workshops, panel discussions and vendors, but the attendees ... they dress like animals.

Attendees say they like to imagine what it would be like if animals could walk and talk like humans.

These folks say the word, 'anthrocon,' means human-like animals.

"Anytime you take an animal or something that is not human and give it human characteristics that's an anthropomorphic," says Anthrocon, Inc. chairman Dr. Sam Conway. "We playfully call it a 'furry.'"

Be sure to watch the video and look for:

-The convention organizer attempting to play dumb about the sexual aspects of Furry fandom

-The guy dressed like a ram who lists off his many other furry costumes (including a lizard )

-The doofus with the fake British accent trying to sound sophisticated


Yes, I realize that making fun of Furries is like making fun of Scientologists -- it's just way too easy -- but I can't help myself.

If I were a toddler and my mom took me to see "The Furries", I'd get as far away from that place as possible. I mean GOOD LORD.

Yeah...I'm willing to bet that you won't find anything like that at Pittsburgh's AnthroCon.

-Although you probably would find a 40 year-old man in that exact costume there.

If this is what floats their boats, I don't have any problems with it. To underplay the sexual aspects of the Furry scene is a bit asinine, though. It's pretty well known what a lot of those people really like to do with those costumes. OWN it, you damn ANIMALS!

Interestingly enough, the guy that made that Lizard suit was over in the Spidey forums a few months ago trying to drum up interest for his eBay auction of the suit. I didn't bite, however.

Anyway, that costume is too FX-like for a furry suit. Furry lizard-lovers look more like this...

Fursuit Conventions

This is a huge Furry event, there's lots of different 'cons' each year and they attract different crowds of Furries. Typically this is where most Fursuiting goes on. Furries will attend the convention in a Fursuit or some will just wear fake bunny-ears, or wings, or a tail or whatever they fancy.

From what I hear, the smell of sweat and cheese is quite overpowering at a Furry con.

The convention itself is usually full of Furry artists selling their wares, talking to the socially inept and drawing commissioned pictures of bigd*ck dragons and selling them in return for some insane price. There's also art workshops (This is where the newcomer Furry artist will learn the all important rule: Testicles must be drawn twenty times bigger than the head etc.), cartoons and of course... soft toys for sale (wink wink!). One of the biggest is AnthroCon. Another is Feral, which sees a group of Furries heading out to live in the wild for a few days a year. I have always wondered what they get up to at Feral, but I don't like to think about it much...

You can use the Furrycon website to locate a convention near you, so you can ensure that you are at a safe distance.

Question- how do you get it on when you have a ginormous head that weighs like 50 pounds? How is that comfortable, anyway?

Another thing- I remember watching something on mtv a few years ago. It was about furries, and it talked about the sexual aspects of it. It showed two furries on a bed and one was combing the other- and stuff. I remember thinking, "wtf?" I couldn't tell if mtv was joking or what.
