Ebert

''Perhaps only three categories are needed: "G," for young audiences, "T" for teenagers, and "A" for adults. These categories would be not be keyed to specific content but would reflect the board's considered advice about a film's gestalt and intended audience. At a time when literally any content can find its way into most American homes, what's the point of singling out theatrical films? It's time to admit we've lost our innocence.''

I have a better idea. Lower R from 18 to 15. That way my Alien and Terminator movies don't get ass raped by greedy pieces of human excrement.

That seems reasonable enough. A 15+ rating an an 18+ rating seem to make a whole lot more sense than "Loosely enforced 18+ rating" and "Strictly enforced 18+ rating". We should drop the R and NC-17 ratings and replace them with R-15 and R-18. If that means re-rating a lot of back catalog films then so be it.

Ebert's the man.

That said, I don't expect the MPAA to change at all.

I LOATHE how movies get watered down for a PG-13 movie, especially action movies with choppy editing. Sometimes I can't even guess a movies ratings. I thought Inception was R with all the violence but nope, PG-13.

Not complaining about Inception, just commenting on the blurring of the lines.

But it makes me wonder why the hell the Matrix is rated R. Ah, but that was a full ten years or so ago.

I bet a significant amount of R movies from the 80's and 90's might be PG-13 rtoday.

I dont think ratings determine what make a film good or bad. And really the MPAA ratings are guidelines. Like some R rated movies I would have no to little problem letting a 13 year old watch like The Matrix, but then there are ones that I would wait until theyre older.
I think people take it too seriously

Know what they need to do? PROHIBIT anyone under 10 years old from going into R movies, regardless of there being a parent or guardian. I can’t tell you how many R movies I’ve seen that were wasted by parents who brought small children and babies with them. Pisses me the hell off.

I think the rating system is fine.

You always can have uncut versions available on dvd.

I'd say that's a hasty generalization. I saw R-rated movies with my dad all the time when I was really young and my ass was quiet.

It literally boils down to how much blood is shown and if a gunshot shows a violent entrance/exit. Inception had blood, but it was shown through the clothes. Which, you can get away with that on tv and get a low rating. But in the Matrix, there was Neo getting shot point blank numerous times. MPAA frowns upon that being PG-13.

Also, in PG-13 movies, you can get away with saying f*** one time. But you can have s*** up to or less than 20 times.

I heard all this on some behind the scenes thing years ago.

And in the 80s you could get a quick titty, but now, it's pushing the line for an R rating.

That wouldn't be necessary. When the PG-13 rating was created, Jaws, Temple of Doom, Beetlejuice, or these type of films weren't re-rated despite initially given a PG.

American's are afraid of nudity.

Nah, only the parents and elderly.

The MPAA is a joke. If I had kids and when I do I will watch the film first and be the judge of whether they can watch it. I could care less what a group of parents on some power trip rate a film. That's all the MPAA is anyways.

No, i don't think it is a generalization, and its certainly not hasty, as 9 times out of 10, this has been my experience when watching R movies in the theater.

The religious/super conservative are afraid of nudity.

Fixed

Same here. Dark Victory is in the minority(small one at that), as well as I was at that age, when it comes to real young kids shutting their mouths during a movie.

It's sad but true most kids can't sit still. My parents were taking me to films when I was 3. I saw my first film on June 15, 1994. it was the Lion King and believe it or not I remember sitting on my moms lap because the theatre was slammed packed. They say I didn't make a sound and just stared at the screen lol. Ever since I have been in love with film. I was an exception, though. Most kids can't set still. the only time I ever got loud in a theatre was when we went to see Titanic. I was pissed when the film started because it wasn't the Titanic it was some random dude in a sub looking at the sunken ship. I kept asking where the actual movie was and *****ing because I already knew it sunk and I wanted to see why it did, not look at the thing on the bottom of the ocean. If I could, I would go back in time and ***** slap myself. I always feel like an idot when I think back to that, because I wasn't like that. When I went to a film I didn't get up and run to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I marveled in the brilliance of what was playing on the screen. I appreciated it. I set through Titanic with a drink and candy and didn't once get up even though I thought my bladder would explode. But like I said, I and a selct few are the exception.
