I'm not a big fan of documentaries but seriously, this one puts most Hollywood motion pictures to shame. With no talking heads or overbearing commentary, director Asif Kapadia takes the events of the life of F1 legend Ayrton Senna a\nd weaves them into a compelling narrative tapestry that flows like the script of an expertly-written biopic. It has heroes and villains, triumphs and defeats and it thrills and moves. Most importantly, 'Senna' is one of the defining examples of how real-life can sometimes be infinitely more fascinating than fiction. The drama of Ayrton Senna's unbelievable victories and his rivalry with Alain Prost would have been laughed at as manipulative and sentimental drivel had it been concocted in the pages of fiction, but it all actually happened and that is why 'Senna' is such a revelation. Adding another stroke of brilliance to this portrait of Ayrton Senna is Antonio Pinto's absolutely sublime score.

I once read that Hollywood heavyweights like Michael Mann and Oliver Stone were trying to make a film based on Ayrton Senna for the longest time, with Antonio Banderas in the lead role. Well, rest assured they (and anyone else) can give up now. Asif Kapadia's film has already rendered the idea of an adaptation completely moot because nothing can hold a candle to the real deal.

Put aside your apprehension for documentaries and Formula One and give 'Senna' a chance. It's just might end up being the best film you'll see all year.
