What do you think about graffiti? Do you think it's an urban art form or just vandalism? A little bit of both? I think it's a great way to express yourself to a whole population. Because think about it, who goes out of their way to go to a museam(sp?) to look at art, but when its painted on your way to work you can see it every day. Also I love how when man-made things such as walls are "defaced" and are easily fixed or replacable the artists are called vandals, but when irreplaceable things such as trees and rainforests and paved down permanantly the people who do that are called contractors. Think about that...

I just ran out and tagged a train. I wrote "FALCOR".

I think it's both. The first picture would be more art while the second is more vandalism seeing as though they only do it to tag or make their mark.

Really, interesting. I think Cope2's bomb is him getting his name up while also being art though. You don't think it looks good?

Eh... that's art that I would rather not see. The first one actually takes a great artist to do something like that. The second one is common... you see it everywhere in major cities. Some people who do it are crazy. I was driving through a Boston tunnel one night and I noticed some graffiti on the side of the tunnel wall... I have no clue how the hell they did it without getting run over. This tunnel is always busy and has no breakdown lane or any place where they could stand on the side and not get hit by oncoming traffic. I think for the most part graffiti is vandalism... I say this because for the most part the only reason they do it is to leave their mark, or tag that area just to be cool and tell other people that he did it. It also leads to people getting in stupid fights over the damn stuff. Graffiti will always exist though... has existed forever and will continue to do so.

Yeah that's what I like most, about some places it seems impossible to reach but somehow they can do a piece. But it's not always about them telling other people who did it and trying to act cool. Most real artists take it seriously and keep a low profile. I agree with the fighting thing though, but that usually occurs when some new toy trys to go over some respected artists piece or a wack cru trys to act hard. That stuff is ******ed. I see how you're thinking though.

vandalism...

then you have art graffiti that turns vandalism and you make art out of it

I don't consider tags artwork, but when the person is actually trying to do a picture, make statements, etc. I consider it art. Generally because with tags, you're just trying to get your name out, whether that's ome kind of property thing, looking cool, trying to get known, etc. Examples like many of those above though, they are actually trying to do or say something. It's fine if they sign it, but I'd think they should do more than that.

I can't say I really support vandalism though. If it on a private owned building, the owners have the right to keep their property from being altered without their permission. I especially hate graffiti on trains and trucks. That's just disrespectful and wrong, and is completely inappropriate. Public structures though, like tunnels and bridges, I have less of a problem with.

Why doesn't "Seen" try and put his artwork to paper or do something where he could actually make money off of his work. He could probably get a scholorship from some art type organization and go to a very good art school. People who actually do more than just tag and do things like the first picture in the thread... along with these could become very wealthy and well known if they put their work to other things.

I'll agree that tagging isn't really art. It really is more about upping your name and has little artistic value. But full out bombs are definitely art. I love graffiti.

Hey, Kingpin...you play Marc Ecko's "Getting Up"?

^^Lol that game is so fake...I tried playing it once. Plus Ecko is out to bring graffiti to the mainstream, which will make it much worse. That's when all the 12 year old kids living in gated communites go into their parents shed and get cheap paint and tag "ICE MAN" on their gatehouse because they saw Trane do it in a game and wanted to try it out because it's "cool". It was a fun game though, but I think it was bad for graffiti.

And art isn't always about money, wiritng on paper and on a wall are two different things too. Plus if they went and did that and sold their artwork, they'd look like a sellout.

And to the guy that said wasted talent, you're a moron. =P You live like 45 minutes away from me so I should go to your house and slap you.

Actually I thought the game was cool. If they can have these fantasy games where you can kill hundreds of people and get away with it, etc.... why not have a game where the premise is graffiti? And where I live there is no graffiti culture. :(

Graffiti consists of sloppy curse words spray painted on the loading docks behind WalMart and Sears where I am.

Where I see a lot of graffiti near me in on the highway and over and under bridges mostly. You have to go into the city of ft. laud and miami to see the really good stuff.

I never see it much, other than ally ways or on buildings the train passes.

Disco Dan and Borf tags were all over DC, both or all were arrested.

Borf was at least intresting, mystery and wonder surrounded each tag. They weren't huge and obnoxiuos like Disco Dan.I think Borf was a compliation of guys. not sure

If it is cool stuff like that i dont mind, but if its mindless tagging on walls it looks ****
