In light of the thread for Best Directors of All Time, I thought it'd be fun for everybody to list their nominees for best composers. I'll start first

James Horner
Jerrry Goldsmith
John Williams
Hanz Zimmer
James Newton Howard
Michael Kamen (if that's spelled right)
Danny Elfman
Basil Poledouris
Alan Silvistri
Brad Fiedel

Some of my favorites from the past 5 years or so:

John Powell - Perhaps the best of the "X-Men" scores
Clint Mansell - Great scores for "The Fountain" and "Requiem for a Dream"
John Murphy - "28" Them from "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later"
Bryan Tyler - "300" and "AVP: R"

Thoughts :woot:

Hans Zimmer... a definite no.

He's a good composer and all, but for the past decade, his specific sound has permeated many Hollywood movies (even for movies he's never composed for) and it's getting stale. I'd like to see the resurgence of more orchestral composers like John Williams... whose Indy 4 score is far better than Zimmer/Howard's TDK score.

But no one's mentioned Brian Tyler? His score for AVP 2 is the best action score he's ever done, and the only good thing about that film.

I did say Brian Tyler, but for some reason I typed "Tyler Bates." Don't know what I was thinking. But yes, I loved his score for "AVP: R" and "300"
