Starring BAFTA winner Sarah Lancashire, "Happy Valley" is a six-part drama written by Sally Wainwright, and follows the personal and professional life of hard-working, dedicated police officer Catherine Cawood in a small town where drunkards, drug addicts and teenage pregnancies are a way of life. Her world is turned upside down when the man she thinks is responsible for her daughter's death - Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) - is released from prison. The series also stars Steve Pemberton, Siobhan Finneran, George Costigan, and Joe Armstrong.

Rather old series, but I started watching it recently as the show just concluded and I've only heard good things about it (3 seasons) and I can't help but wonder if HBO's 'Mare of Eastown' was inspired by this series as I am picking up a lot of similarities
(i.e. the protagonist has a young grandson from a kid who committed suicide, ex spouse still hangs around, as well as rampant drug problems in the town, teen pregnancy,)

Posts from @The Shape and myself in the Mare of Eastown thread:

If anyone wants to watch British Mare, check out the show Happy Valley.

That's exactly why I loved this so much. I need more Happy Valley.

It's coming back! Third season in the works as we speak.

OMG really? That's awesome! I knew they'd talked about S3 FOREVER but it never seemed like something that was actually happening. :mrk:

So yeah, totally agree that Mare was basically an American version of this brilliant show, and very hyped to see this new season. It doesn't come out here for another couple months still.

Never heard of it but it looks fun enough. :) I like cop stuff anyhow.

"Fun" not the word I'd use to describe it, as it gets very intense, but it's freakin' great.

I wanna rewatch the first 2 seasons before the new one. Might nominate it for the TV Club for May.

Just realized I don't have access. It's AMC+ which I don't have. :(

Now, that was a super easy binge. One thing I really love about these UK shows is that some of them only run about 4 to 6 episodes a season which makes it so much more easier for me.

I honestly don't think I've enjoyed binging a show this much since Luther although I wouldn't call it an easy because it gets pretty dark at times, but as someone who loved Mare of Easttown its definitely my kind of show.

I just wish I caught on to it earlier, but thanks for this recommendation, guys.

Got 1 episode left of season 2 and honestly I think the biggest shock for me
is finding out that the serial killer is living with his mother, I thought this whole time it was his wife or sister , also Ryan's teacher has the softest voice ever, am I meant to believe that she can be a teacher ?

I remember being shocked about the mom thing too. When Catherine said something about "her son" in the finale I was like, "Wait, WHAT?" :funny:

That season 2 finale was some of the most intense television I've seen in a long long time and an absolutely masterful performance by Sarah Lancashire and the actor who plays John.

Finally finished the S3 (and the series as a whole) just an incredible series that just does not get enough attention and praise, loved how they wrapped it up, however saying that I did think that S3 was the weakest of the series
There were just too many inconsistencies with one of the storyline that it felt like I had missed an episode
