Meet the Cast of HBO's 1980s L.A. Lakers Drama

The premium cable outlet has ordered a drama based on the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, which went by the "Showtime" moniker during a decade that saw them win five NBA championships. The series will delve into the professional and personal lives of the team and its management as they created one of sports' most revered dynasties and a team that defined its era, both on and off the court.

The as-yet-untitled series will be executive produced and directed by Adam McKay (Succession, Vice). Also executive producing are McKay's partner Kevin Messick, writer Max Borenstein, co-writer of the story Jim Hecht, Jason Shuman, Scott Stephens and Rodney Barnes. The effort is inspired by Jeff Pearlman's book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.
This thing’s cast is so ****ing stacked.

That cast :wow:

As a Lakers fan this is something I am very much looking forward to. I’m old enough to vaguely remember the days of Magic Johnson. Then of course came MJ and the Bulls 90s dynasty

Bo Burnham as Larry Bird really tickles me.

Adrien Brody as Pat Riley... that sounds hilarious, and not in a bad way. :hehe:

I did not realize they were making this until right now, but this explains Bo Burnham trending today. As a Lakers fan, I am definitely intrigued, especially if the show leans into the truth.

Man, scrolling through that cast list was like watching the ship in the opening scene of Spaceballs. It just keeps going and going and going. As indifferent as I am to the Lakers franchise in general, I did always find any documentary or ESPN special about that period of time including the Magic vs. Larry rivalry to be particularly interesting. I'll definitely check it out.

Adam McKay’s HBO 1980s Lakers Series Adds Seven To Cast – Deadline

Rory Cochrane (White Boy Rick), Danny Burstein (Evil), Austin Aaron (13 Reasons Why), Ta’Nika Gibson (Iron Fist), Edwin Hodge (Mayans MC), Terence Davis(Twenties) and Ja’Quan Cole (Wu Tang: An American Saga) have joined the cast of Adam McKay’s Los Angeles Lakers HBO drama series, based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is producing.

Written by Max Borenstein, the fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era both on and off the court.

HBO's Lakers Series Casts Its Jack Nicholson and Richard Pryor

HBO's Los Angeles Lakers series just cast its version of Richard Pryor and Jack Nicholson, with Mike Epps and Max E. Williams playing the two celebrity fans of the team per a report from Deadline. Epps is finally getting the chance to play the famed comedian over seven years after being announced as the lead in a biopic set to be directed by Lee Daniels that failed to make it out of development hell.

Three other notable additions have also been to the cast, with Carina Conti set as Lakers choreographer and future star Paula Abdul, while Mariama Diallo will recur as world famous supermodel Iman, who was married to power forward Spencer Haywood between 1977 and 1987.

Kind of sucks, but I will say the new guy probably resembles Bird a lot more than Burnham.

First trailer is up (with an F-bomb, so… y’know) and the show is now titled Winning Time.

Show looks good but sad to hear McKay and Ferrell broke up over this apparently Ferrell wanted to play Jerry Buss and McKay casted Reilly instead it couldn't be just that

Hope they go into everything

And so on… these posters are killer.

This looks amazing guy playing magic looks great hell so does Reilly as Jerry Buss

Just when that "Everyone's a Winner" song got out of my head after hearing it in the GOTG game, here it comes again in this trailer. :o

Looks like a fun watch though.

Tonight, folks.

Great first episode, Did Jabbar really tell that kid he shared screen time with in Airplane to f off after ? Lol

Jason Clarkw was hilarious as Jerry West.

I'm really digging this.

Also, Will Ferrell needs to get over himself because McKay cast Reilly over him as Jerry Buss. Just going by the nature of the show, if he had played him it would have been too distracting and come off as a parody.

It’s the fact that Adam McKay didn’t phone him to let him know. John C. Reilley ended up phoning him out of respect and since they’re friends.

Even McKay admits it was wrong of him not to let him know personally considering their history and friendship together.
