Help-How can you tell if headphones are high quality or not

The only method I know for determining whether or not a pair of headphones have good sound quality is by listening to them. How can you tell by looking at the product description and all that if they are good sound quality?

Headphones for what? Ipod? Computer? And if the computer, do you want them for music, or movies, or what? If you play a lot of online games, do you want a microphone on the headphones, too, or what?
