I had been periodically backing up some very important files onto a dvdr disc & then deleting the original file from my computer to save some HD space but recently while trying to add more files onto the back up dvd the whole thing was accidently erased & reformatted & I lost everything that I had on that disc.

Is there a simple way that I could try & recover some of my lost files without downloading software from the internet?

you could try a system restore but no promises

I attempted that but couldn't even get system restore to work. Is there any free & safe software that allows you to extract files directly from the formatted dvd? The dvd still shows files as being on the disc only problem is that I can't access them. I've already tried a few programs but fear that I may have added a buttload of spyware on my computer now.

When you delete a file the memory it was occupying becomes available for use by other files. It isn't actually deleted, it just eventually gets overwritten. There's a small chance you can still recover the files intact, but the more things you do on your computer and the fuller your hard drive is the less likely it is. Creating new files, downloading files, even just browsing the internet will create temporary internet files any one of which could potentially occupy some of the space of your deleted files.

The problem with recovery programs is that the good ones cost money and the free ones aren't trustworthy, and downloading them usually only hurts your chances of being able to recover the file. I'm sorry to say I don't know of any free programs that actually work.
