History To Remake Iconic ‘Roots’ Miniseries

I'm definitely a fan of Malachi Kirby after this. It couldn't have been easy to take an iconic role (with the original actor on hand as well) and have to hold one's own with established talents like Forest Whitaker and James Purefoy. I hope to see him land some lucrative roles in the near future.

Also, as a Walking Dead fan, I marked out when I saw Chad Coleman as Mingo.

I'm definitely excited to see where things go for him and all the other fresh faces.

Watched the first ep. Powerful. It's definately a hard watch…but necessary. I think the most tragic part of slavery (that goes hand in hand with the inhumane brutality of the institution) is the tearing apart of the family. Just imagine having your family members brutalized, raped and sold right before your eyes, and you're powerless to do anytng about it.

The psychological control was very interesting too. The scene where Kunta Kinte first arrives at the plantation; he's looking around and he comments that there's only one white man watching all these slaves, and can't figure out why they don't fight back. Isolation, despair and psychological control was very much what held slavery together for all those years.

Finished the whole series. Loved it. Thought the first two eps were stronger due to Malachi Kirby's presence but i liked the series overall.

Even though i would have liked to know what became of Kunta and Belle (died of old age, sickness, killed, etc..) it reminds you that when family members were bred and sold as they were back then, you had no clue what became of them most of the time...

One thing that I would have liked to have seen updated was the scene from the original where Kizzy eventually makes her way back to the Reynolds farm where she learns that her dad died. She finds the grave and marks through the name "Toby" and writes "Kunta Kinte". IIRC, that's not in the novel, but I thought it was a superb way for Kizzy to honor her dad.
