On my phone, can't post links. But a butt backwards job destroying bill has been introduced. A bill that would make sites responsible for what users post. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter could be shut down. Protect IP Act bill I think is the name.

The people who introduce bills like this need to learn to mind their own ******* business.

This is what happens when you start treating corporations like people and stop treating human beings like people.

Obama better do what he can to shut this bill down if he wants to get re elected

This will get nowhere. It's pretty much in direct violation of the First Amendment.

So, what exactly is this bill about? I haven't heard of this before today.

This is HR 3261 and it is called the Stop Online Piracy Act. I it's being sponsored by Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas and 12 other congress persons (both Republican and Democrat). It looks like the legislation is directed towards web sites like thepiratebay.org and others that steal copyrighted material and make it available online to people for download. It looks like a sincere effort and I would suggest that people read the bill themselves before passing judgement on it. You can find the text of the legislation here.

I have. You can't let them set that precedent IMO. Stop it here and make a statement. Its how they take your freedom away with no resistance, in baby steps. Its the whole "a penny a day" strategy for stealing.

Share this on Facebook and wherever people. Send those letters.

If that is indeed what it is about, then I'm all for it.

I don't trust this country enough with that amount of power. Too many corrupt with power.

I can understand one's concern that the government might be trying to take over the Internet, but I am all for a fair marketplace were people can participate in commerce without the fear of losing their shirt as a result of some copyright infringement by some third party (be he foreign or native). A lot of movie studios, recording artists, and their investors have lost quite a bit of money over the last decade over Internet piracy and it is about time something more forceful was done about curbing it.

We are moving into a phase now where new media is leveraging the Internet to bring us content in various forms (novels, music, streaming video, software, etc.) directly to multiple devices that will obsolete the older technologies that we are familiar with (the VCR, DVD player, VG console, MP3 player, et. al.) and with that transition, content providers face the vulnerability of the piracy of their works. We have an outfit like ThePirateBay.org who is basically flipping the bird at copyright holders while they offer their content at no cost to consumers and the latter party takes the loss. This is even after the passing of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA) which criminalized the circumvention of Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected works (unfortunately, it does not stop the copying of works that were not protected via DRM).

What the Stop Online Piracy Act (or SOPA) will do is allow the same copyright holders to basically sue those parties who provide content that violates the copyright laws (presuming that the copyright holder was harmed) on these websites in question and tell them to stop providing it (via court injunction). Right now this is being done via cease and desist request from the copyright holder, that is not always followed. The government is only involved in this only as a mediator (via the courts) and in my opinion, I see nothing really wrong with this.
