How can we bring original ideas back into Hollywood?

I wish there were still sci-fi comedies around today. Good ol' Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. *sigh*

There are original ideas in Hollywood. No, not independent film. The dirty little secret is that most independent film is so cheap that they can't afford to have anything exciting to happen in their movies. Even a simple footchase through the streets is expensive because of the time it takes to set up shots, thus you just get people talking. No, the real ideas are in the unproduced scripts. But, why would a movie studio feel inclined to produce this wonderful script when people would more likely go to the next Shrek movie? You want original ideas? Don't go to crappy sequels.

/\I've seen plenty of excitement in independent films.

But outside of that...Hollywood is always following trends. That's how movies stay relevent. It's a simple formula really. As long as sequels, remakes, and adaptations keep making money Hollywood will keep making them. But sequels, remakes, and especially adaptaions are as old as cinema itself. This is not a new trend. And of the many films released in a year only a tiny percentage (although, a big chunk of the summer movies) are either a sequel, a remake, or an adaptation. Obviously people are not watching enough movies. We go to see the Halloween remake and then complain that we only see remakes these days. That's just dumb. Expand your horizons a little and you will find that film has much more to offer us than just sequels, remakes, and adaptations.
