I guess it's still not known whether it will be in conventional theatres or just IMAX?

That could make a pretty big difference.

It's not going to make that much. Even if TDK tops off at $550 million domestic during it's initial run, it'd have to make $51 million more during the re-release in order to beat Titanic. By that point, the DVD will be released, so I honestly doubt the general public will invest in it.

That's the thing I don't understand, why rush the DVD? TDK is literally making history and something this big will probably not happen for a very long time. I mean if it's possible for the Re-Release to top Titanic, why rush the DVD? ****loads of people will still buy the DVD, regardless of when it comes out. Not to mention if the film gets nominated for Best Picture a lot of people will go see it in theaters again.

They will not miss the Christmas rush. That's all there is to it. Yes, people will buy the DVD eventually, but everyone and their brother will want it for Christmas.

As for a re-release, I did some digging into various examples. American Beauty made a staggering $55 million after it opened wide again, but that was AFTER it won Best Picture and waaay before it was released on DVD.

Gladiator is a better example, since it was released in May, left all theaters in October, was released on DVD in November, then was re-released back into theaters in February after it won Best Picture. And how much did that make in 3 months of re-release? Just over $1 million.

TDK will not make that much in re-release, especially if it's only in select IMAX theaters. I will be shocked if it's more than $5 million.
