I'm not familiar with the character. Can he/it smack Hulk and Thor around? If not, what kind of threat does he/it pose on The Avengers?

Short version: Yes, he can. Ultron's exact powerset varies, but the usual features:

1. An adamantium body that makes him indestructible to mere physical force

2. Class 100 or so strength

3. Versatile energy attacks of roughly similar firepower

4. The Mento-Intensifier, which is basically a psychic attack

5. Various cyberkinetic abilities

Pretty sure they'll change that to Vibranium if they mention it in the film. Adamantium belongs to Fox.

He also has a form of ray beam that induces hypnosis or a comatose state.

Yeah, but in practice, it makes little difference. The MCU version of vibranium largely has the same properties as adamantium, anyway.

And even if his physical body is destroyed, he can just upload his consciousness to any nearby computer or electronic device. He then simply builds a new (and usually upgraded) body for himself.

That's pretty much his schtick in a nutshell. You can't destroy Ultron, because he just rebuilds and upgrades with every new iteration. The ultimate techno-virus.

If I were to make a guess, I'd say that the movie will probably have Ultron in one of his earlier variants. Which is to say, he'll have the indestructible chassis, allowing him to ping the best attacks the Avengers have. . . but he *won't* have all the layers of internal protection he has in the comics. So, the various tricks they have historically played in the comics to bypass his indestructible shell will be on the table.

i'm betting that he doesn't get his indestructible hide until the final encounter with the Avengers.

I agree with most of the above.

- He'll be physically powerful enough to match the Hulk/Thor because that will be an awesome site to see.
- He'll have crowd control powers (supersonics, army [MoE, drones], tentacles/tendrils) to match the 8+ Avengers in battle.
- He will be "unkillable." Possibly having multiple forms throughout the film and definitely ending on a cliffhanger where his red eyes are found in the rubble and don't quite flicker out.
- Virtually indestructible besides this, agreed on the Vibranium chassis, thus allowing him to deflect Thor's hammer (until Thor gets angry enough).
- Control of any and all tech (possibly including Iron Man or War Machine's suit(s), Falcon's wings, Black Widow's tech) giving Thor, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch room to shine with their magic-based powers.

And anything else that Joss decides to set him apart from Skynet, Eagle Eye, the machines from the Matrix, and I, Robot.

OR the Asgardian metal SHIELD keeps uncovering in AoS ;) or even Chitauri metal

but to make the URU as indestructible as Mjolnir, it has to be forged in a Dying star, which could be Ultron's down fall

Not to mention Thor could probably Make Ultron fly all over the place like Mjolnir LOL

Chitauri metal? please no that punny material. Hulk will smash Ultron easily.

If they choose to make Ultron indestructible and OP, it really makes you wonder how the Avengers could take on a threat like that.

Same way they've done in the comics.

1. Attack his innards: heat him until his absorption capacity is exceeded and something inside gives; shake him violently until something cracks; sneak somebody small into his body and attack him that way.

2. Scarlet Witch screwing around with his matter manipulator/power supply/other magic-y things that he can't directly defend against very well.

3. Antarctic vibranium, which can dissolve other metals.
