Hi all!

So this is essentially a reminiscing thread. One thing I've found fascinating with films in pop culture, especially the hugely popular ones, is looking at how they were received when they first opened, as opposed to how they were received years later as they became cinema classics, or cinema infamy.

For example, I don't remember a time when Star Wars wasn't STAR WARS. By the time I was old enough to watch it, it was already a pop culture giant. I don't remember a time when I didn't know Darth was Luke's dad, the films were already legend. So I would be fascinated to see people's opinions who were old enough to watch the thing in theaters, and hear about what it felt like to watch it for the first time.

And that goes for any film really, I thought it would be fun to just reminisce about what it felt like to watch some of the classic films for the first time.

I saw the first Paranormal Activity a couple days before it came out.

Also I guess going to Avatar Day counted where few people got to see 15 mins of the movie in 3D months before it came out.

I remember the PA hype. They had a great ad campaign, showing pretty much only the audiences freaking out.

And Avatar was crazy. I will say, while the actual story is incredibly derivative/recycled, it's still probably the only film I've ever watched in 3D and went, "Okay, that was worth it." Every other 3D film I've watched I've sat there and wondered why they even bothered to convert it, because it added nothing. Avatar was surprising too, because I know I never expected it to be the highest grossing film of all time.

I saw Star Wars during it's initial run...Empire Strikes Back was terrible because every kid in the school playground was yelling out that Vader was Luke's father.

I also got to see Star Wars during its initial run in theatres. I don't remember kids spoiling the ending by saying that Vader was Luke's father. I do remember thinking that Vader must have been lying. James Earl Jones had the same reaction when he read his version of the script.
