In The Tall Grass as a Movie

Posted: May 7, 2015, 17:03:15

Joblo reports that In The Tall Grass is being turned into a Movie.

Vincenzo Natali, the brilliant director behind CUBE, SPLICE, and HAUNTER (not to mention episodes of NBC's "Hannibal" and Netflix's "Hemlock Grove) is set to bring us an adaptation of Stephen King and Joe Hill's novella IN THE TALL GRASS, which will be kicking off pre-sales in Cannes next week, according to Screen Daily.

Natali adapted the screenplay from the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill, which first appeared as a story in Esquire. Paradigm represents US rights to the project.

Steve Hoban of Copperheart, which is producing in association with Mosaic Media, serves as producer and Gloria Fan is executive producer. Principal photography is scheduled for September in the Toronto area.

I read the first half of this story when it was published in Esquire years ago. I never found the second half.

Mostly I am stoked that Vicenzo Natali gets to make another feature. I am a big fan of his work both in film and in TV. Dudes got a good eye.

mother! meets Signs.

The story is mostly
the siblings
so I'm assuming Wilson is gonna show up as
the dude who attacks the girl

I really hope it's good, King Netflix adaptations were pretty good so far

Out of the two, Gerald’s Game was good (Mike Flanagan for the win!) but 1922 wasn’t IMO.

Who knows with this.

Saw this yesterday. It was quite fun actually, Patrick Wilson was Great.

I do think the movie could have been a bit shorter, perhaps by 10 or 15 minutes.
There was a scene towards the End where I was ready to turn off the tv for good, but I ended up skipping forward to the next scene instead. It was just too much even for me.

Watched this last night and I thought it was just ok honestly. It's well made and has some nice creepy imagery, but this felt way too long IMO, and by the time it got to the middle portion I was already feeling kind of bored by it. Patrick Wilson seemed like he was having a lot of fun in his role at least, although maybe a bit too much fun considering I thought he went a little over the top towards the end.

6/10

IMO, this film is an absolute sh*tshow. It thinks it's clever, and it's not. At all. I don't need EVERY part of a film spelling out for me, but some parts have to be given some concrete explanation, even if it's just enough for you to piece the end result together. I'll spoiler tag the rest....

1) Who/what were the grass beings?
2) What was the rock?
3) Why was there a random empty church by the side of the road?
4) There were a few cars behind the church, but no people....?
5) What the hell was the scene with baby/her giving birth/eating something?
6) Was her brother genuinely in love with his sister?
7) When Cal, the brother first meets Tobin (the boy) and Tobin takes him to the rock. We never see Tobin touch the rock though like his dad or Travis or Cal, so why/how does he take him there?

Honestly it's like they said "People get lost in long grass....there's some funnies with time travel....and we'll work out the rest as we go."

I genuinely hated this film. There's a very small list of films I hate/despise, but this is on there.

The only things I could kind of piece together or have at least assumed;

The 'grass people' were previous humans, probably the owners of all the cars by the church, who entered the long grass and touched the rock and and ended up staying, eventually turning into those things. Not sure if that's right, but if not, then there needs to be some explanation for them. Absolutely awful.

The scene where (I think) she gives birth, but then what?! Are we meant to assume she's fed the baby or the placenta or something? And when Travis finds her there's no sign of the baby or visible signs she's given birth, so WTF was that whole scene?

Also, when Tobin meets Cal for the first time, Tobin takes Cal to the rock. But we never see Tobin ever touch it like we do Ross and Travis, but we have to assume he has at some point? In the same way we never see Cal touch it, but when he drops Travis that's when we know Cal did touch it, yes?

And there's no even credible way to get your head around the 'time travel' element of it because it just doesn't make sense!! Is it that it's a loop and they keep going in and dying until the last time when Travis puts Tobin in the church (how?! There's no explanation here at all!!) and he stops them from going in and repeating the cycle?

Honestly it's an absolute mess.

Getting stuck in long grass like that could make for a scary, good film. Perhaps have a bunch of people randomly kidnapped and dropped at different areas in the film with the threat of creatures being released at night, and have the strangers all try to find each other. That could be a half decent scary film.

This is just an absolute clusterf**k and I hated it with a passion.

-9/10. A film that's just insulting on every level.

This SUCKED. So boring and made very little sense. Like Triangle if Triangle was bad and dull.

Wilson tried his best, though

Joe Hill must have been on serious drugs when he wrote this. :p Very bizarre.
