With Superman and the rest os the DCU or is it separate?

To my understanding it is, technically, in continuity. But the Sandman series is just really, really not set in the same kind of environment as DC's main comics. The Endless do make an appearance once in a while as far as i know, just extremely rarely.

Yes, it is. Mr. Miracle, Martian Manhunter, Wesley Dodds, and the Scarecrow all had cameos in the first volume, Dr. Destiny was a major character in the first volume, Metamorpho's side kick, Element Girl, apeared in volume three, the JSA were breifly mentioned in volume four, and Batman, Martian Manhunter, and Superman had a cameo in volume ten.

Plus Daniel has been in JSA a couple of times.

Thats good. I know Death appeared in a Incredible Hulk issue. It would've been funny if Marvel made it appear if it was part of theirs.

He was also in JLA once.

What happened is that Marvel's version of Death, which while female is usually shown as a skeliton in a purple robe, was invited to Rick Jones' wedding. She then took the form of Death from Sandman because it would be more suitable for a public gathering. It was an in joke.

Yeah I figured it was a joke, but it still would've been funny.

Yeah. You know, I'd kind of like it if the DCU recognised the Sandman series more. Not so much with the Endless, but maybe have a character run into Hob Galding or something.

Have they ever appeared in Hellblazer continuity?

Not sure. John did apear in the first volume. But Constantine almost never shows up in the DCU either.

As long as John having dated Zatanna is still in continuity, Hellblazer will stay apart of the DCU.

And John in Books of Magic giving his version of the Phantom Stranger's story.

I always appreciated that one of the characters in Kingdom Come was the son of Zatanna and John Constantine

Was he really John's son? I knew he was Zatanna's, but I don't remember them saying that he was John's. But hey, I guess that would make sense. Hey, isn't there a Zatara in the Teen Titans? My theory was that he was John and Zatanna's kid from some triste in the 80s.

the bonus features in KC describe him as Constantine's son

Cool. Also, some other examples of John being in the DCU are he atended Hal Jordan's funeral, met Batman (who he called "Squire"), went drinking with the Doom Patrol, and was at the opening of Guy Gardner's bar/resturaunt "Warriors."

Too bad they have this no crossover with Vertigo policy now at DC.

It really is a shame. I'd still likle to know the relationship between Death from Sandman and the Black Racer of the New Gods.

Speaking of, Giovanni Zatara also went by the name John...
Oddly, Grant Morrison wanted to use Constantine in an issue of doom Patrol, but was told not to. He was supplanted by the incredibly similar Willoughby Kipling. I guess John was doing something more important at the time.

And on the Death note: Neil Gaiman says that the Endless' Death is the ultimate incarnation, though an issue of Captain Atom says the Racer is "death as an inevitability", whereas Death is "death as compassionate release."

I've heard some good things about this series... What's the best volume in any of your opinnions? Or should I just start with Vol. 1?

Yes. I read the same Wikipedia article. But I want to know what exactly that means. How are the two related to each other? Is The Black Racer simply how Death apears to the New Gods and, by extention, whoever's around the New Gods at the time? Or is it a seperate entity that Death allows to operate exclusively for the New Gods?

The series is better than Jesus, cake, hot girls who read comics, that feeling you get when you're just chilling with your friends at two in the morning and actually feeling like you belong, and Playstation 2 all rolled up into one. Start with volume one and prepare to get your world rocked.

Well.... in that case I guess it could be decent. :D I think I might be getting the first two from Amazon, but the descriptions say that the third one doesn't have to do with the other 9. Is this true, and if so is it just as good?

Volume three is a collection of short stories. While in terms of the narrative it isn't too important, but it's a great read. One of the stories, A Midsummer Night's Dream, was the first (and last) comic book to ever win a World Fantasy Award for best short story.

I think Gaiman's view on Death is that she is definitely not the Black Racer...as in, it's not like the Racer represents one aspect of death while she represents another. She definitely, completely, wholly is "Death." If anything, the Racer (and other such personifications) are all minor, incompletely aspects of her.

And, yes, Sandman is one of the very best comics out there. It's very untraditional though, much less action -- superhero or otherwise -- and much more esoteric talking and abstract art. And maybe that's exactly what made it so awesome. I can't wait for the absolute editions to come out.

Personally, I stringly recommend for new readers vol 6, Fables and Reflections. It's a collection of single issue stories rather than a big arc, each with different characters and by different artists. It will give you an idea of the scope and scale of the sandman series. Plus, they're some of the best stories of the whole series.
