Hey guys,
So I just got an SSD (60GB) strictly for Windows and software. I disconnected my other drives, and popped in my OEM discs - low and behold it won't work because those discs were made for harddrives bigger than 60GB!

So I called HP and they refused to send me another disc, I did however get a pirated copy of an OEM disc made for 16GB drives and bigger, but I also have the option of downloading the Windows 7 32/64 bit Professional UPGRADE for free.

Now I know it's possible to do a clean install with the upgrade version, but can I install it to a DIFFERENT drive than the one Windows is currently installed to?

I don't think that you can run an upgrade and install it to a different drive. The whole way an upgrade works is numerous system files are replaced, untold changes to the registry and so on. Therefore this has to take place on the same drive.
If you had a full copy of the OS then you would be able to designate another drive as the target. But you might well end up with a dual boot machine.

However, it's been a long time since I did such things and I can't remember precisely.

If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 I think you will need something a lot larger than 60Gb as the system drive. I have a 128Gb SSD and I use it solely for the OS and associated files. I have virtually no software installed on it. It is already about 65% full and that will only grow as time goes on. Service Packs, critical updates etc.

It installs fine - when you register, it just asks you to call them. Pretty straight forward.
