That sequel to "School of Rock" is pretty much dead, but Jack Black and director Richard Linklater have found another way to reunite on the big screen. The duo will team up with screen icon Shirley MacLaine in the new black comedy "Bernie."

Based on the Texas Monthly magazine article "Midnight in the Garden of East Texas," "Bernie" will follow a Renaissance man/mortician (Black) who forms an unexpected friendship with an eccentric and rich widow (MacLaine). According to The Hollywood Reporter, when he kills her, he goes through great comedic lengths to make people believe she is still alive.

The film will be produced by Mandalay Vision ("The Kids are All Right") and Castle Rock Entertainment ("Flipped"). The latter's participation would make it appear "Bernie" will be released by Warner Bros., but it's unclear at this time.

Linklater had the biggest hit of his career with "Rock" which grossed $131 million worldwide and proved Black was a legitimate box office draw.

Black will next be seen in 20th Century Fox's tentpole "Gulliver's Travels" while Linklater is close to directing a 12-year film shoot chronicling the growth of a boy which would star Ethan Hawke. MacLaine was part of the ensemble hit "Valentine's Day."

Production on "Bernie" should begin sometime this October.

Well since they are using a woman this time I could pretend it's a loose sequel. I was really fond of the original but haven't seen it since I was a kid.

I liked the "duo-aspect" of Weekend at Bernies 1 and 2, someone that one another could play off each other. Also, it just means that Black will be with her most of the movie, and the gags probably won't be as inventive.

I'll for sure look into this movie more, and check it out in theaters, but like "bullets" said: It's a very loose sequel.:csad:

Ah, man this news sucks. I love the first film, the second I try to block out of my mind. But this just doesn't sound promising at all.

Isn't remaking a comedy film kind of like retelling an old joke and not telling it as well as the original?

NONONONONONONO

Weekend at Bernies was awesome. I own it and love it. Its on my top 5 comedies list. I can even dig the sequel.

This news, is just, saddening.

Well, at least Linklater is behind this...

Maybe there'll be something special to it..

Yes.

Then again, including Jack Black is ruining any kind of joke, even the most original and funny one.

This sounds rather...twisted. I don't recall the original Weekend at Bernie's, did they kill Bernie in that movie?
