James Purefoy ("Rome") has been cast in the title role of Samuel Hadida's upcoming comic book adaptation Solomon Kane, reports Screen Daily.

Purefoy is set to play the eponymous 16th century soldier and Puritan. Kane is a damned soul following a life of cruelty and brutality, and must redeem himself by battling the forces of darkness.

Paris-based Davis Films (Resident Evil: Extinction) is planning three installments based on the comic books by "Conan the Barbarian" creator Robert E. Howard.

Michael J. Bassett will direct from his own screenplay, and principal photography is set to begin in Prague.

Hadida called Purefoy "a powerful and commanding screen presence", adding: "Purefoy's ability to embody Kane's complex heroism, struggles and failings as he wages a mortal battle, made him the perfect modern hero in this epic fantasy."

Cool News. But why is this in the DC comics forum?

Didn't Marvel do the Solomon Cane comic adaptation?

A very solid choice. Solomon Kane is Robert E. Howard's best character after Conan. The character is the originator of Vampire Hunter D and Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing. I can't wait for this film.

Whoops, i actually meant to put it in misc comic movies as i wasn't sure who published the comic, i think it kinda belongs there anyway as Marvel don't appear to have anything to do with the film.

Yet another move that has nothing to do with the source material...:whatever:

Yeah marvel did the comic adaption (wich I really liked, Leloup coolest archenemy, eva!), but they didnt create him. That where I also read the first story (was in a conan anual). Yeah I would say he is a 20's 30ties pulp/noir/dark hero (shadow, Phantom) plus a dagger and cloak/swashbuckling style hero. I wonder how much of the poems they will include. I dont like the actor they chose to handsome (Kane is skinny, and has a face full of fanatism, pain, and revenge, thats how I see him).
I hope they dont make another Van helsing out of him, cause hes not. True he did fight supernatural enemies, also vampires, but he had many very real enemies he dealt with (thief, rouges, pirates and other scumbags).
And I hope they wont put in a love interest none NADA. They can have secondary chars hook up but not him. He has too many problems to think about things like that.

I thought it sounded familiar. When I was a kid I knew about the Marvel miniseries, but didn't buy it. Maybe when the movie comes out they will collect it in a trade.

Hugh Jackman seemed too handsome for Wolverine as well and he turned out good. So, we'll see.

The poster semi- reminds me of this book cover by Jeff Jones:
