JGL and Robert Zemeckis to Reach for the Clouds

Man, that teaser was so Zemeckis. I'm definitely looking forward to this. I'm so glad he is back to making live action films.

Looks visually dynamic and I feel pretty confident in JGL at this point.

That's a pretty spectacular new poster:

Just looking at that poster sells the fact that I'll never be able to see this in theaters. Much less IMAX or 3D. Good God. :csad:

Happy they didn't go all crazy about it being in 3D.

I thought Gordon-Levitt's accent sounds decent. French accents are supposedly hard to fake.

He does speak fluent French IRL, not that that has that much to do with the ability to fake an accent, but it can't hurt.

I don't know if it bad, it's just... weird. Like he's doing a gag or something.

It does sound like a non-French person doing the accent.

It could be great, but like what Man on Wire showed, Phillipe was a ass to her friends and his girlfriend after the stunt. I felt so bad for them in the doc, especially the ex-girlfriend.

Yea, I wonder if the movie will acknowledge any of Petit's negative aspects or just whitewash him into the plucky boy who could.

Yeah it really bothered me. Phillipe is naturally a charismatic and charming person. But behind that, there is a narcissist who became obsessed with fame. A man who negated the people who helped him out with this stunt.

From the trailer, did he do the walk with an injured foot?

Considering how involved the real Petit was with this production (isn't that him behind JGL in that second set pic?), I won't hold my breath for it to portray him too negatively.

I know JGL said in an interview a while back that he spent a lot of time with Petit while preparing for the role.

Ya, that may happen

If the dude likes what JGL is doing, what more can you say?

James Berardinelli hasn't posted reviews yet, but on Twitter he's alluded to this and The Martian being two of the best movies of the year.

Two quotes from that review that sound encouraging:

Having seen James Marsh’s Academy Award-winning documentary, Man on Wire, and having read high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s book, To Reach the Clouds, I couldn’t imagine how director Robert Zemeckis could possibly find a unique yet worthy way of retelling and honoring this incredible true story. Lo and behold, he pulled it off with The Walk, turning Petit’s “coup” into an especially harrowing, entertaining and heartfelt feature film.

The movie definitely focuses on Philippe’s determination and talent, but it certainly doesn’t ignore the fact that he could also be extremely hotheaded and selfish. The Walk easily could have been all about the walk itself, but because Zemeckis and co-writer Christopher Browne take the time to show how Philippe’s behavior affects the people around him, the movie functions as a strong character journey as well.
