Variety reports that Josh Hartnett has been cast to lead Snoot Entertainment's[IMG] martial arts action film Bunraku.

The 30 Days of Night actor[IMG] will play an unnamed, revenge-seeking drifter in an alternate universe.

The trade says Snoot boasts the pic's chockablock inspirations, which stretch from Japanese puppet theater to video games to German expressionism, and is billing the story as a spaghetti-Western-samurai-gangster mashup.

Guy Moshe (Holly) will write and direct, with filming to begin this spring in Europe.

    Hellboy Joins Bunraku
    Perlman to play villain.
    by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, May 9, 2008 - Bunraku, the "spaghetti-western-samurai-gangster mashup" starring Josh Hartnett and currently filming in Romania, now has a villain.

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Hellboy star Ron Perlman will play an Eastern European gang lord pursued by a drifter (Hartnett) and a samurai (Japanese actor Gackt).

Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson and Scot Kevin McKidd have also all signed up for the project, which will be set in a hyper-stylized universe and draw inspiration from, amongst other things, puppets, comic books, origami and German expressionism.

Snoot Entertainment is producing, and a bigwig from the company told the trade mag: "I've always loved movies in the 'no-name stranger coming to town and ending up in a bigger struggle.' I think this is an opportunity to take this genre and spin it on its head and bring a unique and strong visual style to it."
