Jurassic World - Part 6

It has been Apatosaurus since the 1890s, but they also "discovered" another related species at the same time, which was named Brontosaurus. In or around the 1970s, it was confirmed that Brontosaurus never existed and was a result of the skull of a random other dinosaur getting mixed in with an Apatosaurus skeleton. This isn't like Pluto.

The head thing was a separate incident from the Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus confusion. For a long time they didn't know what the head of the animal looked like since they never found one attached. It was thought that it was related to Camarasaurus, so they just used a Camarasaurus skull instead. This is actually not uncommon, since complete skeletons of dinosaurs this large are rare. The proper skull was actually found in 1899 a short distance from the specimen found for the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, but it was thought to be too small until further studies in the 1970s showed that it was the proper head. Apatosaurus is actually more closely related to Diplodocus than Camarasaurus.

The Brontosaurus story is a lot less interesting. In 1877, OC Marsh discovered a large sauropod that he called Apatosaurus. In 1879, he found a larger sauropod he called Brontosaurus. This was the time period of the Bone Wars and the discoveries were described poorly with the intention of finding as many new kind of dinosaurs as possible. In 1903, it was determined that the two specimens were similar enough to be the same genus, and Apatosaurus would take priority because that was the name given first.

Everything I've seen from this movie has a sheen of fakery I don't find appealing.

I think the latest tv spot footage is gorgeous, and the cgi is very good. No need to bring on model makers and casters and molders and the scultpors to make four or five dead Apotosauruses for a single distant shot when the vfx guys can do them so well in a computer.

I do miss the blend of CGI and practical effects of the first and second movies. This looks like JP3, where it's all CGI.

They've confirmed there is practical fx in this as well as CGI. So you'll get a mix don't worry, just cause we are really only seeing cgi in the trailers doesn't mean that's all we are getting. Trevorrow has said there's animatronic Dino's as wel mixed with cgi.

And Marvolo I agree each spot we get it's looking better and better. Very good stuff can't wait.

Though I'm still really looking forward to this, everything does have a glossiness that doesn't sit quite right.

This glossiness you speak of has to a lot to do with the cinematographer's bizarre decision to shoot on 35mm and then make it look like digital stock. The film's grain structure is almost non existent which begs the question why they spent the money to shoot on 35mm at all. If they wanted a digital look then they should uave shot on digital. But whats done is done. Its slick, but I would have preferred a more "filmic" look.

There were a lot of practical effects in JP3 as well with the carnivores (Spinosaurus, T-Rex, Raptors). Not as much as in the first two, but they were there.

There's been practical mixed with cgi in all 3 films, and Trevorrow has confirmed the same for JW. Thre will be animatronic dinosaurs mixed with cgi. So yeah.

I agree, I said something similar after the initial trailer.

Nice shots here:

And Michael Giacchino will begin recording the Jurassic World score in two weeks.

This is BS, this has to do with YT compression destroying the texture, you can see it on plenty of movies shot on film. Seriously, go on HD-trailers or movie-list, find like one of those D-Cinema versions, which has like this huge bitrate, a much higher file size (sometimes up to a gig just for a 2min trailer) and the texture is there, the grain is there. Watching it on YT makes it look glossy & less detailed (obviously).

Hell, even the QT version is much better. It's like watching super 16 mm material on YT or Vimeo, most of the time, it's dreadful, the compression messes up the grain completely (much less so in 35 mm but still) & the texture of it.

So yeah, even then, today's Kodak film stocks can be remarkably clean, it just depends on lighting or what you do with color timing.

It doesn't to me. Looks like a mixture of CGI and animatronic/in-camera visual effects.

I think they're just holding a lot back. So I'm sure there's a lot of animatronics. Just like how the T-Rex will be in the film but they're holding back on her in the marketing.

As I've said already in this thread just to clarify again for some, it's not all cgi. This film (as confirmed by Trevorrow) will have animatronic dinosaurs. And will be a mix of both just like it has been in every single JP film.

I have no complaints regarding "too much" CGI, because I know the animatronics were confirmed. However, this movie is just a couple months away and I feel everything we got his just a recut of the first trailer, which was ok. But whenever they drop a final theatrical trailer, they need to sell me with some fresh dialogue and footage - and of course, a T-Rex. JP was a game changer back in 1993, and this new film has a lot to live up to.

As much as I hope that the cgi would be as great as it was for the early 90s I think the recent planet of the apes has been this generations Jurassic Park.

I can't be the only one still hoping there is a surprise cameo from some of the original cast in this I am I? I would flip out of we got a suprise Ian, Grant, Tim, Lex, or Saddler cameo. At the very least, i would hope the movie references them in a cool way. I may have said this befire, but it seems weird that Lex and Tim had no say so in the development of Jurassic World considering they are Hammond's family and the only ones we know about.

In a world of post-credits and cameos, I'm sure someone will make a cameo somewhere.

Unfortunately, it'll probably be spoiled before the film is released.

I'm really glad one film finally decided to show the actual theme park Jurassic Park opening for the masses. Always wanted to know what that would look like.
