Action-Adventure Karate Kid Legends: Jackie Chan/Ben Wang/Ralph Macchio

I didn't know they filmed this in my city, but then I tend to forget Montréal seems to be a stand-in for NYC in movies nowadays.

The reviewers are saying a major plotline was a surprise and wasn't even suggested of being a thing in the promotion. Meanwhile how do you spoil a third take on the base Karate Kid story.

The whole synopsis is on Wikipedia. For anyone who's curious about its connections to the rest of the franchise...

It looks like there's just a Johnny Lawrence cameo at the very end. No Amanda, no Samantha, no Robbie, no Miguel...kind of a waste for this not to tie into Cobra Kai more since that was probably why this got made in the first place.

I'll just wait until it's on Netflix.

My question is does the movie ever mention there's a major difference between Karate and Kung Fu, or do we ignore it once again??

Just going with the trailers Sifu Han understands his kid is in danger even with all of his Kung Fu skills and in the mixed martial arts world we live in today recruits Sensei LaRusso to help round out the "third" Karate Kid

I kind of get it in the sense that this is going for as broad an audience as possible and those cameos might feel a tad confusing (also, I don’t think Sony owns the rights to use those characters?)

But I am surprised there wasn’t a Jaden Smith cameo considering Jackie Chan’s main role and how much bank that film made when it came out.

I think they do. Cobra Kai was produced by Sony Pictures Television. It would have maybe been too confusing if they threw in a bunch of the characters and it makes sense why none of the kids would be there given how the show ended but since it was arguably the biggest popularity boost the franchise has seen since the '80s I'm surprised they didn't incorporate more of it in this.

It’s funny, I think this would’ve felt like much more of an event (I mean, Ralph Macchio back as Daniel teaming up with Jackie Chan!) had we not just had 6 seasons of Cobra Kai.

It’s the double edge sword of feeling satisfied cause the show kind of gave fans everything they could’ve wanted, but in turn has kind of deflated the novelty of seeing Macchio back on the big screen, even though he’s teaming up with Jackie Chan.

I’m actually shocked to see the 2010 version opened to 55M! I don’t see this getting that high, but who knows.

I think if this also came out like 2-3 years ago during peak Cobra Kai popularity this would have been a surefire hit but the way the final season rollout happened, even fans were over it by the time the last batch of episodes dropped. There was very little fanfare.

That's shocking to me too, but I suppose more people went to the movies back then. :csad:

After watching comments sections on the trailers back in December I figure there were two audiences. The Cobra Kai Miyagi-verse base who just got satisfied with their ending who got no signals that any of those years would be introduced into the story. And I was shocked at the fans clamoring for Dre/Jaden Smith.

What we got was Mr. Han name dropping Mr. Miyagi and the sifu and sensei together.

I have no idea why Daniel LaRusso is in this movie other than nostalgia and fan service. He has nothing to do here.

It's a weak premise. To do another Karate Kid movie with LaRusso back, you need him to bond and forming a true relationship with his student. That doesn't happen here.

I never fully understood the premise of bringing Mr Han & Daniel together in this.
If Daniel is in it - then surely it has to tie in to the originals and or Cobra Kai.
If it's more of Mr Han, then surely its a loose sequel to the last one - but why bother bringing Daniel in?
Seems like they didn't know whether to make this a Mr Han sequel or go for the nostalgia angle.
In the end it's a bit of a weak attempt at both.

I think it’s time to retire this franchise for good. Cobra Kai got absolutely ridiculous by the end (and not in a good way like it was at the beginning) and this sounds like a dud.

Were any of them mentioned?

Unfortunately it sounds pretty disappointing how it all ties together and for a movie that felt pointless to begin with, that feeling is amplified now reading what they came up with. I agree with others that this is probably a 'see when it comes to Netflix' situation.

As much as I enjoyed the Cobra Kai journey (with some ups and downs) they've really diluted the franchise and the concept as a whole. You can only do the story of 'good kid gets on the bad side with bad kid and has to learn martial arts to best him' so many times before it feels very repetitive.
