BEIJING -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's powerful uncle was stripped naked, thrown into a cage, and eaten alive by a pack of ravenous dogs, according to a newspaper with close ties to China's ruling Communist Party.
The report could not be independently confirmed by NBC News on Friday.

The man who was believed to be in charge of training his young nephew to take over was executed as a traitor, indicating a shake-up in Kim Jong Un's regime. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
Jang Song Thaek, who had been considered Kim's second-in-command, was executed last month after being found guilty of "attempting to overthrow the state," North Korea’s state-run news agency reported.
The official North Korean account on Dec. 12 did not specify how Jang was put to death.

Assuming it's true. That "could not be independently confirmed" bit means the source is not necessarily reliable.

Maybe it's all a lie meant to make Un look even more formidable. Maybe he had his uncle killed then fed to the dogs. It's possible he was fed to them alive but none of it is confirmed.

I have the opposite feeling. Violent crime that is ultimately a result of poverty and institutionalized racism that creates a generation of desperate, frustrated, and emotionally damaged people is something we can conceivably fix, and is in fact something we have been very slowly making progress towards fixing. 2000-2010 was the least violent decade in all of recorded human history, and 2010-2020 is shaping up to be even less violent still. Carttoonish supervillainy, on the other hand, is a lot less reasonable to deal with.

Forget the hangman’s noose, the firing squad or lethal injection: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un executed his uncle and a handful of the man’s aides by feeding them to a horde of 120 starving dogs, according to a shocking account.

Jang Song Thaek, the former No. 2 official in the secretive regime, was stripped naked and tossed into a cage along with his five closest aides.

“Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called ‘quan jue’, or execution by dogs,” according to the Straits Times of Singapore. The daily relied on a description of the execution in a Hong Kong newspaper that serves as the official mouthpiece of China’s government.

“The entire process lasted for an hour, with Mr. Kim Jong Un, the supreme leader in North Korea, supervising it along with 300 senior officials,” the Straits Times said in a piece published Dec. 24, 2013, but only now getting traction in the United States. Two American national security officials contacted for comment said they had not heard that account, which first appeared in the Wen Wei Po newspaper on Dec. 12, 2013.

Now it's being reported by Yahoo, who got it from the Straits Times of Singapore who got it from a Hong Kong newspaper that is the official mouthpiece of China's government that probably relayed it from a North Korean source.

Eh....this sounds made up. It just sounds too over-the-top to be true. But North Korea does this kind of cartoonish wannabe supervillain stuff all the time, so it can't be dismissed just for sounding bat**** crazy.

At the same time, North Korea is like Hitler. You can make up all kinds of crazy ridiculous claims about NK/Hitler and people won't question it, because everybody knows they're bat**** insane anyway.

I'm not really sure how you jumped to that conclusion based on a random beating of an innocent woman. Did you just picture a poor black man who just got laid off from his job doing the beating, as opposed to a rich white guy doing it for thrills?

While the fact that violent crime is decreasing in recent years is very reassuring and a great thing, I just really don't like the idea of blaming the violent actions of an individual on anything other than the individual himself (or herself).

I can see Kim Jong Un doing this for entertainment value, but it does sound a little far fetched.

Given that he had his ex girlfriend executed by firing squad, I'd say his uncle went the same way.
