Police close in on shoplifter whose theft of a laptop from a Greymouth store was featured on the Internet
28 August 2006

Time is running out for a cheeky shoplifter who became an Internet star after stealing a laptop in broad daylight from a Greymouth computer store.

IT at Work uploaded its security footage of the thief taking a Hewlett-Packard laptop on Google.com to the sound of the Pink Panther theme music.

The footage has been a hit with internet users worldwide, making it the site's most watched video clip for a week.

Constable Rose Green says Christchurch Police have identified a prime suspect and are in the process of tracking him down.

The music improves that video many times over.

Hope the thief gets caught soon.

ETA ;)

The US Goverment once thought I stole a Top Secret laptop.

No Joke.

haha, that guy gave the camera a nice frontal-face view for an image-enhancer to work with.

It's only a matter of time.

On another note, I'm just hoping that some hollywood suit-wiseguy doesn't have the bright idea to put something similar to this in the sequel to Steve Martin's Panther film.:o

be funny if he came back

"Hi i umm "brought" this pc off you a few weeks back and i seem to have a virus on it or spyware or somthing can you sort me out with some software?"

Or better yet he didnt have a HP but a Dell with those exploding batteries :D

Haha, guy was way too erratic. If he were slick I'd give him my thumbs up of badass stealth approval.

That scene would fit right in.

As would that.

Although I'd prefer Peter Sellers to have done it. :(

He was; I'm surprised that one of the people in the store didn't even notice how strangely he moved.

I'm betting that this guy will come back in several weeks w/ a clean-shaven face, different type of hat, and a different coat on.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that all laptops have their internet identifying markers so that they can already be traced if connected.

It seems to be a waste of time to steal laptops.
