Speculation abounds, apparently he wants him bad for one of the roles.

Just watched Dallas Buyer's Club and Leto was amazing in that, so I'll pretty much give anything he's in a chance. Plus I love Liam Gallagher and of course the Beatles, so, ticket sold.
