The Last King of Scotland helmer Kevin Macdonald has lined up the epic Roman drama The Eagle of the Ninth as his next project after he finishes the Brad Pitt-starrer State of Play which he's preparing to shoot for Universal, reports Variety.

"Eagle of the Ninth," which Macdonald plans to direct early next year, is adapted by Jeremy Brock, co-writer of "Last King of Scotland," from the classic 1954 teen novel by Rosemary Sutcliff. Producer is Duncan Kenworthy (Notting Hill).

Set in Britain during the 2nd century A.D., it's the story of a wounded Roman soldier and his Celtic slave who embark on a perilous journey into the far north to discover what happened to the Ninth Legion, which went on a mission into the wilds of Scotland 15 years earlier and never came back.

The soldier's father was the legion's general, and his disappearance, along with the loss of the legion's symbol, the eponymous eagle, cast a stain upon his family.

Shooting will take place in Scotland and locations in Eastern Europe, most likely Romania.

Never read ther book but it sounds like a great story

'Eagle' enlisting Kevin Macdonald
Director takes on Roman military drama

Helmer Kevin Macdonald will follow "State of Play" by directing the Roman military drama "The Eagle of the Ninth."

Focus Features has signed to distribute domestically and sell offshore distribution rights for the pic, set to begin production in August.

Jamie Bell is set to star in the 2nd century A.D. tale, and Channing Tatum is in talks to join him. Script is by Jeremy Brock, who teamed with Macdonald on "The Last King of Scotland."

Duncan Kenworthy is producing through his Toledo Prods. banner. Financing will come through the Focus deal and equity funding from Film 4, which will get U.K. broadcasting rights as part of its deal.

The story revolves around a wounded Roman soldier and his loyal Celtic slave who try to solve the mystery of the Ninth Legion, a brigade of Roman soldiers that vanished after heading into the untamed Highlands of Scotland 15 years earlier.

Hungarian locations will stand in for 2nd century England, while the Scottish scenes will be filmed in Scotland.

Bell is set to play the slave, while Tatum has been offered the lead but has not yet committed.

I read the title too quick and thought someone was making a movie adaption of the fast-food restaurant...

Oh great, just when I thought there was nothing left that McDonald's would try to put on a bun...

*re-reads post*

Oh, never mind. :p

whats with the hair? it looks like he spends 4 hours infront of a mirror.

Trailer up it's now just called: "The Eagle"

Once again a trailer that reveals too much

Looks decent, I'm taking a "wait and see" stance. Tatum's mush mouth could take away alot from it

This looks horrible. Honestly i watched it and just saw my hate for Tatum. He is a bad actor, doesnt hollywood get that? Plus not a single female at all? Even Gladiator had females.

I would like this more without Tatum.

The original title was ten times better than..The Eagle.

This movie looks exactly the same as that other one with Michael Fassbender.

Channing Tatum is really miscast here. He doesn't look like a Roman Legionnaire at all.
