I'd have preferred, if they are doing a prequel, that they focus on something like the Romulan/Federation wars, simply because it might grab the mass media's attention and put a little love on Star Trek
The best
Star Trek episodes and films have been character-driven. It didn't matter how much stuff they blew up in the last few movies, it still didn't work.
TREK IV (for me) was the last one that worked to any great degree. And of course,
TREK II was the one that made it work best.
The original Star Trek tales could have ended right there in the closing moments of TREK II, with Kirk finding Spock's inscription to him.
That
felt like the end of the story that began in 1966.
TNG episodes like "The Bonding" and "Inner Light" are what made that series must-see for me. "Voyager" I could take or leave. I never watched an entire "Enterprise," mostly because the UPN affiliates kept changing, not being carried by my cable system, etc. Maybe it's time to give NBC
a major network Trek series again?
Perhaps they could finally do the "Starfleet Academy" premise, but I'd prefer to see that on the small screen, where it will have more of a chance to find itself. The "Harry Potter" movies have largely been about young characters' adventures while attending a school, so audiences are certainly prepared to accept the setting.
But I'd prefer an "Academy" show that was set in the "present" Trek universe of the Next Gen, DS9 and Voyager crews.
Also, I do like the idea of focusing on non Starfleet characters for a change...Let's see some everyday people in the 23rd century, whose connection to Starfleet is indirect...
But to the very idea of recasting Kirk or Spock- especially Kirk, I say:
