MATT DAMON

I can eat the Bush daughters.

My sister is watching that ATM

Seriously though, I think his statements, while well-intended, are quite foolish when properly analyzed. If there was a draft, or we employed one, and people were actually forced to go into the service, I'd agree with him totally; Bush's daughters should just the same chance of being drafted as poor person's child.

But we're not in a draft. Military service is optional. No one is forcing lower income peoples to join or anything that comes close to that. Sure, due to their economic circumstances they have less options than someone like the President's daughters, and thusly are more likely to join the service, but there's nothing practical the government could do to change that (unfortunate) fact.

I have no idea since this is just a commercial.
but wouldn't choosing wether to enter conflicts more carefully, and making sure that these conflicts are worth the lives of those who indeed volunteer for service be "something practical" the governement could do?
the point, and again, I'm only guessing, is that if the President's daughters where indeed part of the military there's a bigger chance that he would more judiciously consider his options when it comes to the military.

Now that is a good point. However, I've always disliked the analogy:

It's just such a total fantasy. Besides - as I said - there not being really anyway to push Bush's daughters into the service if they don't want to go, there's the simple we really don't know if Bush would even care. I mean, plenty of people - leaders - have thrown their own lives, and the lives of their family away for the pettiest of reasons.

If Damon's thoughts are we should be as more careful in risking our servicemen's lives, he should have said just that. It certainly wouldn't have hurt his point in the least.
