I loved the 'What If' one shots that Marvel do and it got me thinking,
What if Tony Stark had died in the cave in IM1 and never finished making the first suit..
Would the Chitauri have ever invaded?
Would Thanos be lurking in the background still?
Would Earth just be unprepared without a fight?
I think I've pin-pointed Earths involvement with the MCU on goings to when Odin cast out Thor to Earth thus starting Lokis interest in Earth?
What if hey?..

If he'd died, I would have cried. My baby!

As for the other things, I think they would have still happened regardless. Because it all started with the Tesseract and Thor would still be alive so, I think it would have still gone the same. Except the part where Tony creates Ultron. That wouldn't have happened.

Oddly if Tony died the MCU would still have everything it has now, except Iron Man of course

Then who would've stopped the nuke in The Avengers?

There might not have been a nuke, Loki might have picked a different place to stage the attack, no Start, no Stark tower, where they attack originated.

Where else would he go? Loki wanted to go and make a spectacular statement with his attack as stated in the movie. Even if Stark Tower didn't exist, New York is always a great place for Alien Invasions as seen by every movie ever.

Also, wouldn't Obadiah Stane take over all of Stark Industries' assets including the company itself? He'd probably make the company the biggest defense contractor in the world and have a serious amount of blood on his hands.

I'm not sure Fury would have gone through with the Avengers Initiative. That or he simply recruits someone else. Either way Loki would attack at some point, though the events of the Avengers would be completely different. I think he'd still go to New York and unleash the Chitauri, but the nuke might still be in play. Who else but Stark could stop it? Even if New York lives, there's IM3. Stark not around means no particular person would go after the Mandarin (SHIELD's around, but if they didn't bother to act in the days that IM3 occurred then why would they now?). The President would be assassinated much faster...

And then there's AoU. Who'd bankroll the Avengers with SHIELD gone? I mean sure, Ultron wouldn't exist without Tony, but nor would the Avengers.

Goes to show how important that rich bastard is.

However, Loki went there because of Stark's power source. He would need to go somewhere else instead if Stark had died.

I agree, it seemed interesting that on the official Marvel timeline for the MCU the origin point of everything kicking off was the "I an iron man" moment,
I think everything else would have happened but NY would be gone!

Exactly. I don't think Loki would have attacked New York because the tower wouldn't be there. Maybe he would aim for the president, who knows? But as for stopping the nuke, if there still was one in this universe then I'm sure someone else would have stopped it. It's like the What If? graphic novel I read about Ultron. In this case though, maybe the nuke wouldn't have been stopped and New York would have crumbled, as a consequence or result of Tony Stark dying.

I dunno. .___.

The Avengers would have never tasted Shwarma! Oh, the horror of alternate realities.

If Stark hadn't been around, the helicarrier probably would've fallen out of the sky when Hawkeye attacked it. They may not even have been capable of launching a nuclear missile.

Phil would've sent Sitwell (instead of Stark) to recruit the Hulk instead of Abomination. Sitwell may have failed, and Blonsky may have ended up on the hellicarrier instead of Banner.

When Thor first arrives and takes Loki from SHIELD custody to have a long talk, he wouldn't have been interrupted by Stark.

Hammer would've probably never built an army of Hammerdroids.

AIM's plot against the president would've succeeded.

Wait, no, okay. Just listen and...

Hammer. As an Avenger.

Oh, man, I would kill to see Sam Rockwell in some sort of "What If..." universe were he was an Avenger. More points if he knows it should be Tony and he's like fallen into some alternate universe were Tony was assassinated and he becomes the Avenger's go to tech guy. I mean, what was Tony's first mission? Annoy General Ross into not giving up Blonsky? Hammer could totally annoy Ross! He's the perfect substitute!
