THIS giant pyramid scales new depths – plunging 300m BELOW the ground.
The incredible 65-storey 'earth scraper' in Mexico City has been designed to get around height limits on new buildings in the capital.
The subterranean building has ten storeys each for homes, shops and a museum, as well as 35 storeys for offices.
A glass floor covers the massive 240m x 240m hole in the city's main square to filter in natural light from the world above.
The design has been crowned with a Mexican flag.
Esteban Suarez, from architecture firm BNKR Arquitectura, said the building would also house a new cultural centre.

It looks and sounds amazing... but it will probably never happen. :o:csad:

And seriously ironic unless they redefine what "skyscraper" means. "Earth penetrator" is more appropriate if you're going the opposite direction of the sky.

I find it a little risky since Mexico City is prone to seismic activity from time to time. Nevertheless it's an incredible design.

As cool as this is, what happens is there was a fire or some kind of major disaster? How would everyone get out?

The article calls it an "earth scraper".

Yeah, it sounds like it'd be harder to go up than down a skyscraper.

As Marx said, I think safety would be an issue here.

It reminds me of "the hive" from Resident Evil.

"Get out?"

Heh, heh, heh.....

Somebody just use this for a reality show where the contestants are forced to stay here for a certain amount of time, and the last one standing wins.

They probably just want to hide underground from all the shootings and massacres.

I hope this underground skyscraper doesn't become too mainstream.

The same way they'd get out of a skyscrapper. Through the front door. I mean, jumping out the window isn't usually considered a valid safety option untless you're on the second floor.

An underground building in a city vulnerable to earthquakes

Mexico needs to worry about it's drug cartel problem before spending obscene amounts of money on anti-buildings.

That would be a fairly decent idea, if not for the quakes that city gets. The inverted pyramid shape also makes travel between floors somewhat impractical. How do you move between the floors of a 65 storey building whose outer walls are at an inward angle and the center is entirely empty to allow the passage of light? You can't design an elevator for that.

It's not a skyscraper then. It's a ...ground-digger.

Why not? Would it be impossible to design an elevator that moves diagonally?

I think it would be better if they just scrap the pyramid idea just cause its mexico and do the same thing with a rectangular building.
