This casting choice is made mostly because him being young and popular. No, it has nothing to do with color. Chris Pratt would also be wrong for the same reasons.
I don't think the film will be any better than the generic sword and sandal flics of our time.

Why couldn't they atleast have tried to make it something better, and brought in an actor that is more known for his skills than his looks?
Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Jeremy Irons - to mention a few.
Russell Crowe could also have done it if he didn't already play Noah

DiCaprio and Jamie Bell would portray the character younger than the four above.
