HONOLULU (AP) - Dorie-Ann Kahale and her five daughters moved from a homeless shelter to a mansion Thursday, courtesy of a Japanese real estate mogul who is handing over eight of his multimillion-dollar homes to low-income Native Hawaiian families. Tears spilled down Kahale's cheeks as she accepted from Genshiro Kawamoto the key to a white, columned house with a circular driveway, a stone staircase and a deep porcelain bathtub. Her family will live there rent-free, but must pay utility bills. "I'm shocked. I'm overwhelmed," Kahale said. "From the little box we had to what we have today."

Kawamoto, whose own eyes started welling up as Kahale cried, handed over two other homes Thursday to homeless or low-income families. Kawamoto, one of Japan's richest men, said he plans to open eight of his 22 Kahala homes to needy Hawaiian families. They will be able to stay in the homes for up to 10 years, he said. Native Hawaiians are disproportionately represented among the state's homeless and working poor.

Kawamoto owns dozens of office buildings in Tokyo under the name Marugen and his been buying and selling real estate in Hawaii and California since the 1980s.

He has been criticized for evicting tenants of his rental homes on short notice so he could sell the properties, as in 2002 when he gave hundreds of California tenants 30 days to leave. Two years later, he served eviction notices to tenants in 27 Oahu rental homes, mostly in pricey Hawaii Kai, saying they had to leave within a month. He said he wanted to sell the houses to take advantage of rising prices. Kawamoto selected the eight low-income families from 3,000 people who wrote him letters last fall after he announced his plan. He has said he tried to pick working, single mothers. Giving away mansions shows more dedication to helping Hawaii's homeless than just handing out wads of cash, he said. Asked whether he was concerned about losing money on the effort, he laughed and said: "This is pocket money for me." Kahale's new house is worth nearly $5 million, an average price for the mansion-like dwellings on Kahala Avenue. It is one of the more modest homes in the neighborhood, many of which feature ornate iron gates, meandering driveways and sculptured gardens. Kahale became homeless two years ago when her landlord raised her rent from $800 to $1,200, putting the apartment beyond reach of her salary as customer service representative for Pacific LightNet, a telecommunications company. She first stayed with relatives, then moved to a shelter in September. "What we need to do is appreciate," Kahale said after getting the keys to her new house. "As fast as we got it, it could disappear."

Sounds like he's looking for retribution for his past. Either way, its pretty cool. I'm just wondering how they're going to pay the bills.

Yeah seriously, just the utilities will cost a small fortune.

Heart's in the right place, but I'm sure they'd be happy with a two bedroom apartment.

They're going to spend all the money they have on utilities. How will they buy food?

As everyone else said, paying for the utilities may be problematic.
He probably could have done more good selling the homes(who needs 22 houses?) then using the money to build apartment buildings and giving those away.

hullo? sell the house or furniture.... chaching! $$

Well, she been living homeless for 2 years now. I'm pretty sure her and her 5 kids know how to live without some of life's luxuries, like electricity, a bed, a good shower, clean clothes.......

Plus, she lives in hawaii. I'm guessing she'll take a bath in the ocean.

but those five daughters will probably screw everything up! well, unless, if they all planning to work in some illegal workshop or sell their body for money.

As far as utilities go, I don't see them using any more water or electricity than the average person, assuming they remember not to leave the lights on in every room in the house.

I agree with the sentiments expressed here in this thread.

Sure, it's a nice idea to give homeless people a home. But to give them a mansion, of which the utility bill is going to cost a bomb!

If I were this guy, I'd go about things very differently. The best way to solve poverty is two fold. Number 1: Education. Number 2: Employment. So if I were a billionaire, I'd open schools, fund schools and give them computeres and all sorts of stuff, I'd open community centres, etc. And I'd give local people the opportunity and money to start their own businesses. I'd also build affordable housing accomadations for people.

These are the kinds of things that have long lasting effects for the poor to help improve their situation. Not giving a handful of them mansions.

The guy is taking the easy way out, intead of actually giving these people what they truly need, he just dumps huge property on them and calls it a day, which is an effort that will surely get him in the paper.

Altruism does not exist, there is always an agenda.

maybe it would have been better to give it to an organisation and partition it among several families

sounds a little sketchy with the utilities but i think his heart is in the right place. wish more sickly rich people besides oprah and bill gates would help out more with the poor.

Sad truth about Bill Gates and Oprah though....they have the funds to do a hell of a lot more than they do.

They do more than most people.

In addition to charitable donations, they do something more important, create jobs, and the people who hold those jobs spend their money on goods, which spreads the money even further.

The only rich people you should rail against are the misers, those who do not spend their money and create cash flow.

"Philanthropy

In 2000, Gates founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a charitable organization, with his wife. Bill Gates Sr. has credited David Rockefeller's generosity and extensive philanthropy as an influence on his son. The two of them met several times with him and have modeled their giving in part on the Rockefeller family's philanthropic focus on global problems being ignored by governments and other organizations.[1]

The foundation's grants have provided funds for college scholarships for under-represented minorities, AIDS prevention, diseases prevalent in third world countries, and other causes. In 2000, the Gates Foundation endowed the University of Cambridge with $210 million for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships. The Foundation has also pledged over $7 billion to its various causes, including $1 billion to the United Negro College Fund. According to a 2004 Forbes magazine article, Gates gave away over $29 billion to charities from 2000 onwards. These donations are usually cited as sparking a substantial change in attitudes towards philanthropy among the very rich, with philanthropy becoming the norm."

Yet they could do more, accept that fact. I never 'railed' against them. I pointed out a fact.

People will always say they could do more, and if they do, it'll just be because you assume they want acclaim. Double edged sword for them.

that's exactly what I was thinking!!
but hopefully, if she used to be able to afford $800 for just rent and bills on top of that, she will be able to cover it.
if nothing else, she can let other homeless people move in with her and pay HER rent so she can "get back on her feet".

The old proverb....."Teach a man how to fish...etc....applies here. Great intentions. But is this guy gonna pay for the lawncare & repairs that come with being a home owner?? Plumbing, windows, electrical repairs? Property taxes?? Was all of this mapped out? She's got 5 kids by herself. How did that happen? Did dad die or did she get down 5 times with the same guy or 5 different guys? Why do I ask? Because it probes into how this woman thinks...how responsible she is.....

This could probably turn out to be the eqivalent of putting lipstick on a pig.

Sometimes just throwing money at a situation is not the answer. It rarely is the answer. The bigger the house, the bigger the expenses.

This could create more problems than expected.

Hope it works.

Exactly how will these homeless ppl be able to afford the property taxes on these mult million dollar homes? They really have no choice buy to sell the house. What an idiot.

I'm assuming that he will be paying the property tax for 10 years.

Since:
They will be able to stay in the homes for up to 10 years, he said.

I thought living in California was expensive until I went to Hawaii...the utilities alone would be rent for 2 apartments in Cali.
