Most memorable sounds in gaming

One of the more memorable aspects of gaming, but not often discussed about, are the sound effects. We're all familar with the 1up jingle from the very first Super Mario Bros game on the Nintendo NES, or the exclaimation sound when spotted by a guard in Metal Gear Solid. So what sound effects (or jingles) in gaming are your personal favorites?

For me it’s probably all the sounds yoshi makes in yoshi’s story. If you say any of them like “tongue” people tend to know what you’re quoting. Hopefully

Yeah I'm not a huge Super Mario fan (Sega kid growing up) but that sound when Yoshi hatches in Mario World is for me, one of the most iconic sounds in gaming.

My other top picks would be the jumping sound effect in the Genesis Sonic games, the Codec Call in Metal Gear Solid & the 1Up jingle in Super Mario Bros.

I'm going purely effects here and not mention vocals

• Sound of the whip from Castlevania games.
• 9MM gun from Resident Evil classics.
• Ice and spear sounds in Mortal Kombat classics.
• Kung Lao's hat.
• Flying kick and bicycle kick sounds, not the WHOOA that accompany them.
• Sonic spin dash, the flying tails of Tails, breaking item cabinets, hitting a robot in Sonic 3 & Knuckles especially.
• Knocking an opponent unconscious in all the Arkham games.
• Kusanagi Kyo's flaming fist connecting.
• The classic one up mentioned in the opening post.
• The effect of surprise mentioned in the OP.

I love the sound effects of Super Mario and I never played Super Mario until my friend told me to try it out once so I bought it from the Press start with a lot of discounts and now I love that game and its music too.

Pac-Man/Ms Pac-Man, the "gobble sound"

In Golden Axe (the arcade version), you can hear the screams from Rambo: First Blood and Conan the Barbarian. From Rambo, David Caruso's scream can be heard when you kill an enemy and the guy that falls out of the helicopter, his screams is also heard in the game as a villager. And from Conan, various death screams and groans from that movie also used.
