What do you think were some of the biggest or worst cop-outs you've seen in movies?

For example, Near Dark; the main character, and his girlfriend, being cured from vampirism by a blood transfusion.

WAR. Turns out the good guy was bad and the bad guy was good. F*** that s***.

Hide & Seek - when it turns out that the father, not the child, is the killer.

Secret Window - another damned split personality plot

The Forgotten - it turns out to be another f**king alien abduction movie. LAME.

High Tension. A cop out so bad you can only watch the movie once and never again...

Adamantium bullets in Wolverine...nuff said.

Can't really be a cop out if it stays true to the book.

I have a feeling this is going to be a another thread where it just turns into whining. With out answering the true question.

Well if we're going to go that far then I say The Prestige. That was a pretty big cop out that Hugh Jackman was really cloning himself

And I will agree with you...

And add the Batman Begins Ra's/Ducard angle to the Nolan cop-out pot....

The Dark Knight:

Joker mentioning how great being an agent of chaos is and Harvey just figures what the hell, the clown that killed my gf is right, let me kill everyone.

Also, Batman taking the blame for Harvey. Big cop out

American Beauty

Instead of following through on the destruction of a suburban family, the main character is randomly murdered and everyone suddenly comes together in tragedy while Kevin Spacey narrates about how wonderful life is.

I love how this just turned into a I Hate Nolan thread.

I don't hate Nolan, I love his work. But it doesn't mean I will turn a blind eye to his flaws. I'm not a fan boy...

Exactly, I own all four of the movies we mentioned. Are they entertaining, yes, perfect, no.

Fair enough, but then I'd say its a book cop-out.

This is the problem with creating a great premise for a story but not visualizing a good resolve. If you can't come up with a good explanation for it, then the whole thing is a bust.

The most heinous cop out in recent memory has got to be the ending to War of the Worlds 2005.

Neither am I though.Just seemed like you guys were bashing since you were listing movie after movie of his, my mistake.

Its not a cop-out it is a cliche. Infortunetley when king wrote the story. The whole Split personality thing was considered inventive. But once the movie came almost 20 years after the story was written, so you gotta give him a room to breath there.

& just as I thought this is turning into a hate thread.

Infortunetley?

^A cop-out, yeah. A suprise, no. Isn't that exactly what happens in the book?

There's a different between a cop out and a bad twist.

A cop out is an ending or scene that could be challenging and realistic but it goes for something cheap and sentimental or easy. American Beauty, War of the Worlds, Mystic River, are examples of cop outs like that.

Bad twists would be High Tension, Rear Window, The Village, etc.
