My First thread...Superhero HELP needed!

On behalf of several people that have been trying to answer a question about a dead superhero...I beseech thee, are there any comic book superhero experts around?...I got a tricky one for you.

It appears as though all of the silly and/or possibly animosity-laced posts have been deleted. Which I guess is okay. But there was nothing wrong with the posts containing the links to the questions threads, so yeah, I'm kinda confused too.

I have a semi-thorough knowledge of comics, so I'd definitely try in earnest to answer.

What's your question?

We are trying to find out the name of a superhero.

A male superhero who had no Superpowers....he did have self taught martial arts skills. We think the comic was DC..but that may not be correct...the time period would be anywhere from late 70' to mid 80's.

In the story, a group of superheros fights a villain that can absorb and learn powers and skill...he defeats all of the powerful heroes by using their own powers against them. The unknown hero then combats the villain and even though the villain is learning his martial arts skill during the fight, our hero draws on his self will and his conflicting issues of self worth (because in his mind he doesn't have "real" powers...kinda the theme of the issue) and defeats, in fact kills him. The unknown hero also DIES from his wounds.

We kinda remember it being a big deal that a superhero died.

That's about it.....any ideas would be appreciated.

I figure if it's DC, the villain could be Amazo or maybe even Deathstroke. In the latter case, that opens up the possibility that the team in question could be the Teen Titans.

If Marvel, it could be Super Adaptoid or Taskmaster (hmmm, very similar to DC, wouldn't you say)?
