(CNN) -- Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday.
Mandela was 95.
"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."
"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.
Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace. He was later moved to his home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, where he died.
Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

Taken from CNN. I'm a bit shocked.

While it is sad to see him pass, it is hardly shocking to hear that a 95 year old man has died.

I'm not surprised. I mean that in all respect, because I loved him and thought he was one of the most inspirational figures ever. I'm not surprised, but I am incredibly saddened by this. Probably the most devastating death of 2013 for me, by far.

News sites should seriously just get rid of them.

Incredible man, sad news :(

But I will say, at least he died comfortable and free, having lived long enough to see the changes he fought for realised :)

There are plenty of ways his story could have ended along the way, this definitely seems like the happiest of happy endings.

A great man. The world is certainly dimmer for his passing.

Even though he was sick recently, this comes as a surprise to me.

RIP to a very great man, we are all so very proud Mr. Mandela.

RIP. He was braver than most people alive today.

Amazing man. Probably the greatest of our time.

He was an absolutely incredible person. I mean think about it, an entire country where only white people get a say in things and the majority are black. I mean it's unthinkable.

Even though I knew it was only a matter of time I still have so much respect for him

A true hero of the 20th Century has been lost to us.

I am glad that he is now at peace and no longer in pain.

His Funeral service will be held on the 15th December.
