Netflix Plans to Expand Into Gaming Next Year, May Partner with Sony

According to that article, its not a separate app and it would just have its own tab/section to the eXisting NetfliX service. So if you already have NetfliX, there's no need to sign up for a new gaming subscription, it would be there right away and the subscription fee won't change.

Its also codenamed as "Shark" and Sony might possibly working with NetfliX.

Imo, if this works out. This is going to kill Stadia and Luna as plenty of people already have a NetfliX subscription. But gaming cloud streaming? As someone who only buys 1 to 3 games a month, I prefer a physical copy and playing games using a console, so I still don't see myself getting a subscription service for games. While Idk if my internet is going to stream videogames through cloud service smoothly. Its also kinda alarming if this works out and if it heavily affects game consoles in the next 3 to 10 years.

Google, Amazon, and Netflix will be the next console giants confirmed! :o

Don’t forget the tech giants from China like tencent and baidu

I’m keen, hope my internet is fast enough for the task.

of course in my opinion every new console needs like a cute Mario or sonic type mascot so I hope the steam deck and the Netflix series gets one too

Oh my gosh you’re right! Especially with the companion cube!

I think Netflix and Amazon Prime could see some benefits by rolling games into their existing services for the same price (better retention of those customers who benefit from the games too), but they’re unlikely to have something that will compete with a dedicated games streaming service. The tv show/film streaming war is going to be pretty vicious already and will be the main focus I think. Can only spread investment dollars so far (Netflix spent about 20B on content last year) and compete on so many fronts.

I feel like gaming streaming services justneed that 1 game to really draw the people so that the casual would be willing to pay a monthly subscription service, and then build from that. Unfortunately all the big games streamed by Stadia/Luna are already available in other platforms. NetfliX already has the advantage as they already have millions of subscribers, and theycouldeasily market newly released games on their app.

I think also NetfliX would have more success compare to Stadia/Luna if they include less demanding apps. Games like rdr2 would just eat up people's mobile data and can't be played on the run unless you have a wifi router with you. I think NetfliX could be like the counterpart of google play store for streaming mobile games. However, carrying triple A games into their service would rely heavily on fast internet speed which NetfliX wouldn't have control of.

Netflix abuses its subscribers with price hikes every year. Im paying around $20 per month. I can only imagine what absurd price they'll demand every month for access to video games.

Considering I have Xbox game pass, playstation now, and my own digital library of 300+ games Netflix would have to pretty much give me access to their service for free before I'd use it.

$20 isn’t that much when you think about how much blockbuster and companies like that used to charge for literally one movie

It was like $7-$10 for each game or movie if I remember correctly.

Yeah $20 isn't that much. My cable which I don't even use cost $20 a month.

But iirc from where I live, NetfliX can cost less than my cable, it depends on the mobile plan.

This might give casual gamers their fix if there’s no extra cost.

I think there's a good portion of their subscribers playing the less demanding mobile games again and again.

I'm interested to see if the bigger games won't lag. I don't stream, but connecting to something like Ubisoft connect/servers using the ps4, can be really slow.

I heard that stadia is good for having low latency. Although it has the problem of insufficient content and a pricing model that won’t be attractive to many. But at least it shows that streaming is already viable with improvements surely on the way over the years.

I think if NetfliX game takes off and if the games offered by Stadia are mostly available in NetfliX, it would really kill Stadia.

I just don't see most people would even consider getting a Stadia even if streaming games become a thing, when you can watch movies/shows and play games with a NetfliX subscription.

And maybe Amazon should merge Luna with Prime Video to compete?

I'm interested to see the controller that NetfliX would come up with.

Yeah saw that video recently. But I don't agree as of the moment (and even 5 years from now, I just don't see it) that XboX's competition are going to be Amazon Luna and Stadia. It is NetfliX that they should watch and I guess, PsNow.

It was $0.99 - $5.99 at my local blockbusters and independent rental stores. Depending on how recent the film or game was, the format, and how long you wanted to keep it.

I think you’re right. So many people already have a Netflix sub that if they get a good part of what Stadia offers with that then no need to look elsewhere.

Also the business model of Stadia is just not very consumer friendly. Pay the subscription fee but you also need to Buy the games for a separate cost, before you can stream them. Stadia iirc still only has more or less 200 games in their library after 2 years, and I counted the ones that I already have + the ones that arein my waitlist - its under 30 games.

Now if they had access to those 200 games with the subscription without additional cost...
