The Hollywood Reporter's "Heat Vision Blog" has new info about a sequel to the 1983 comedy classic National Lampoon's Vacation being developed with David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) attached to produce and direct the film.

The original road comedy starring Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo introduced the world to the Griswold family as they took a grueling cross-country road trip that led to all sorts of hilarious mishaps along the way. The original movie grossed $61 million theatrically, leading to a number of thematic sequels including National Lampoon's European Vacation in 1985, Christmas Vacation in 1989 and Vegas Vacation in 1997.

The idea for this sequel, almost a reboot of sorts, is that it would catch up with the now grown-up son of Chase's Clark Griswold, Rusty, originally played by Anthony Michael Hall, as he takes his own family on a similar road trip as the one he took as a young teenager. Even though the new movie will reference the original, there are no guarantees any of the cast from the original movies might return--the college humor magazine "National Lampoon" will no longer be involved--but it's thought that Chase and D'Angelo could make appearances as the grandparents, although neither is signed.

Apparently New Line exec Sam Brown, a big fan of the original "Vacation" movies, was sifting through the Warner Bros. library looking for available titles and rights and brought the idea to New Line president Toby Emmerich and President of Production Richard Brenner, who convinced the Warner Bros. bigwigs to allow them to develop the franchise.
In the coming week, they'll be meeting with writers to develop the initial idea into a full screenplay.

You can read the entire story over at the Heat Vision Blog.

Bring back Christie Brinkley!

So are they gonna cast Anthony Micheal Hall for the lead? Or go with a totally different actor

Probably a different actor....they've done it before, so it would not be anything new.

Meh, I'll have to see how this plays out. I love Vacation '83 and Christmas Vacation, but in my opinion, the idea of it being about Russ taking his wife and kids on a vacation just says "instant fail".

It would feel better with Hall. By having him then we'd know that the movie wouldn't just turn into a lets just hire a guy who looks like Chevy and make him act like Chevy.

The reason why the Vacation and Christmas Vacation were such hits was because Chevy Chase and the rest of the cast. It was the chemistry and the comedy they represented. If you aren't going to get Chevy Chase involved then why don't you just make it a new kind of road trip movie instead of labeling it a Vacation film?

Would Chevy do this movie? He is making a bit of a comeback lately.

why wouldn't they get Hall back? He's very manly now than he was before during his Brat Pack days but he can do it. Same thing with Chase.

It depends on many things.
1.Would Hall even want to come back?
2.Would New Line just do with what they did with Dumb and Dumberer and cast look alikes to bring people in. So cast someone who looks and could act like Chevy.
3.Would they rather just reboot it, and just out right remake it. As they most likely want more than one movie.

All I have to say for this post is:

"The Dog wet on the Picnic Basket"

And Clark proceeds to spit it out while Aunt Ida continues to eat the sandwich.

On number 3, It would not make sense if they recast Chevy Chase's character if this reboot is still in continuity. Image if the new Star Trek had another actor playing Old Spock.

It sounds like the kids are the focus this time around but you still need the familiarity of the old movies there too.

Can't have a Vacation movie without Chevy. That would be blasphemous.

I'll check it out. The N.L. Vacation movies are films I grew up watching, must have seen the first film at least 30 times.

The trailer for the first movie:

I rank the Vacation movies in this order:

1. Vacation
2. Christmas Vacation
3. European Vacation
4. Vegas Vacation

Christmas Vacation was #3 of the Adventures of the Griswold family, yet it's so much better then European Vacation.

And didn't Clark sell like food preservatives or something like that? It was mentioned on Christmas Vacation.

Pretty much my ranking as well. I think Christmas Vacation was supposed to be a prequel to the first film, wasn't it?

But the Griswald kids don't age!!! Wasn't Rusty actually YOUNGER in Christmas Vacation compared to European Vacation?!?!

I'm more concerned about this film then I am with Ghostbusters 3. At least with GB3, the four original Busters (Aykroyd, Ramis, Murray and Hudson) will be back. With this, there is no guarantee that Chevy Chase or Beverly D'Angelo will return.
