Ancient humans, dubbed 'Denisovans', interbred with us

Scientists say an entirely separate type of human identified from bones in Siberia co-existed and interbred with our own species.]The ancient humans have been dubbed "Denisovans" after the caves in Siberia where their remains were found.

If they bred with us boring ol' Cro Magnons, wouldn't that just make them just a subspecies / race like the Neanderthals?

You can breed with a different species as long as it's the same genus. It's just that the offspring will be sterile. Like a horse and donkey making a mule.

But, yeah, if the offspring could procreate, then they'd be a subspecies. Still part of the Sapians in some degree.

I believe the article mentioned that there is a trace of Denisovans in modern homo sapiens, as is a trace of Neanderthals (which was mentioned in a study published a few months ago).

Can hominids get married in California?

Battlestar Galactica was right! :ninja:
